BRIEF POSTING DESCRIPTION:

The M EO TELECOMMUNICATIONS - OPERATIONS Department of the P TELECOMMUNICATION Division at Hawaiian Electric Company has 1 Bargaining Unit vacancy available. (Role: Non-Exempt)

JOB FUNCTION:

Performs operates and maintain installation, testing, calibration, programming, and repair of electronic/microprocessor-based communication equipment, tele­metering remote or automatic control systems and electronic systems. Troubleshoots all equipment to the circuit board and component level and establishes interoperability of End-Equipment using HECO’s Communication Networks.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Performs job functions on all electronic equipment and systems including, but not limited to: antennae, microphones, mobile radio, microwave, intercom, data acquisition, automatic and remote control systems, electronic test instruments, uninterruptible power systems (UPS), batteries and battery charges, motor generators, video system, relays and related equipment, cables and electrical interference suppressors as well as all types of protective relays, etc. in accordance with applicable FCC regulations.

  • Installs, configure, tests, repairs, and replaces equipment necessary to support, operate and maintain optics, local area networks (LAN), MPLS, wireless communication equipment, PLTE, Microwave, antennas, microphones, consoles, interconnecting cables and electronic interference suppressors, Transfer/Trip Teleprotection Circuits. etc. with guidance from supervisor, Communication Technicians, Working Foreman, and Engineers.

  • Assembles, installs, tests, repairs, calibrates, programs, and services all types of communications, telemetering, remote or automatic control systems, electronic computers, and CCTV systems under general direction with the aid of drawings and bulletins and in accordance with FCC requirements.

  • Utilizes computers with diagnostic software, related programs, and test devices to configure and troubleshoot equipment to the circuit board, component and system levels and establishes interoperability of End-Equipment using HECO’s Communication Networks.

  • Works and coordinates directly with supervisors, crew leaders and/or engineers of other departments in installing, configuration, modification, testing or troubleshooting communication system, network, or equipment.

  • Maintains manuals, records, and drawings in proper order and in current state. Makes corrections when necessary and reports discrepancies.

  • Maintains remote communication sites and related equipment such as batteries, battery chargers, motor-generators, or other sources of communication equipment and of power supply and control cable terminals.

  • Maintains inventory and inventory record of spare parts, tools, and test equipment. Initiates purchase requisition to maintain inventory levels.

  • Maintain, tests, and calibrates laboratory, field equipment, and test equipment as well as update and repair all to current standards.

  • Directs the work and trains personnel in lower classifications in the performance of all job functions.

  • Investigate customers' radio frequency interference (RFI) and television interference by performing signal strength testing.

  • Makes non-routine tests for special reports and devises special test circuits and test setups.

  • Performs job functions of lower classifications as necessary.

  • Performs End to End Tests and installs HECO Communication System for proper operation and circuit assignments.

  • Performs job functions with minimum technical and administrative supervision.

  • Drives Company vehicle.

  • Assume an emergency management role, as assigned, and perform specific assignments or functions, as needed, in an event of an emergency, not to include routine trouble calls/callouts.

    OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Performs similar and incidental duties as required.

    BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Ability to identify and distinguish different colors and color hues required.

  • Must have or be able to qualify for a State of Hawaii driver's license. Must meet the standards for frequent required driving positions stated in the Hiring Standards for Required Driving Positions policy.

  • Must be able to obtain General Radio telephone Operator license within 18 months.

  • Must pass Company Written Job Knowledge Test and Job Sample Test.

  • Must be able to climb and perform work on communication towers and poles.

  • Must be able to be transported by helicopters as required.

    T323:

  • Satisfactory completion of 12 months on-the-job training as Senior Electrician (Communication) T322.

  • Must be able to satisfactorily complete Independent Course Study (ICS) related training and tests within 1 year.

  • Must pass Company Job Performance Test as outlined in the Joint Technician Committee report.
