Overview

This is a full-time position consisting of four 8-hour shifts per week. The schedule will be a variable schedule with rotating day (7 am – 3 pm)/evening (11 am – 7 pm or 3 pm – 11 pm)/overnight shifts (11 pm – 7 am).

The Emergency Mental Health Crisis Center is within the Children’s Mercy Adele Hall Emergency Department. This is a new, fully staffed zone of the ED, including screening, assessment, triage, referral, care coordination, and short-term stabilization. The crisis center will include 4 safe rooms, 5 consult rooms, 5 observation beds, and 2 triage rooms.​

The Children’s Mercy Division of Emergency Medicine provides the highest level of care to sick and injured children and adolescents in the Kansas City region. The APRN will provide autonomous direct patient management, with the ability to collaborate with physicians of emergency medicine and psychiatry. Responsibilities include completing thorough history and physical assessments, ordering/interpreting lab tests, developing differential diagnosis, implementing plans of care, and coordinating the disposition process. The Behavioral Health Crisis Center APRN will be expected to work effectively with the medical team by communicating clearly with families, working well with physicians and physician trainees, being a resource for nursing staff, and collaborating with multiple subspecialties that function in the emergency department.

The Advanced Practice Registered Nurse I (APRN-I) provides comprehensive, evidence-based advanced practice nursing to address the physiologic, psychosocial, and developmental needs of patients and families within the framework of the collaborative practice agreement. The APRN-I participates in beginning leadership, evidenced-based practice/ research, and organizational development activities with the support and direction of an experienced APRN mentor.

Responsibilities

  • Clinical Practice: competently provides comprehensive, evidence-based advanced practice nursing care to address the physiologic, psychosocial, and developmental needs of patients and families within the framework of the collaborative practice agreement.

  • Professional Practice: actively participates in beginning leadership, evidenced-based practice/research, and organizational development activities with the support and direction of an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse mentor.

Qualifications

  • Master's Degree Required and 1-2 years experience Pediatric RN experience. Exceptions considered on a case-by-case basis within preferred specialty.

  • DNP preferred and 1-2 years experience Pediatric RN experience. Exceptions considered on a case-by-case basis within preferred specialty.

  • Licensed RN - MO, Registered Nurse Multistate License Missouri required upon hire

  • Licensed RN - Kansas, Registered Nurse Multistate License Kansas required upon hire

  • RN Compact license for all states besides KS and MO

  • APRN KS Advanced Practice Registered Nurse KS APRN license in Kansas Required Upon Hire

  • APRN MO Advanced Practice Registered Nurse MO APRN documentation of Recognition in Missouri Required Upon Hire

  • APRN board certification congruent with population and practice setting (see policy statement: Advanced Practice Registered Nurse Roles and Practice Setting) Required Upon Hire

  • PNP- Primary Care AND Pediatric Primary Care Mental Health Specialist (PMHS) will be required

  • Will have two years to be enrolled in a program and five years to complete the program

  • Refer to Nursing and Advanced Practice Provider Licensure and Certification policy for required Life Support Certifications Required Upon Hire

  • Specialty Certification relevant to unit’s patient population (determined by Nurse Manager/Director) Preferred
