The Employee Relations Manager will be responsible for managing employee relations activities across the organization. This position is responsible for developing and implementing employee relations programs, policies and procedures that reflect business objectives, align with culture and comply with employment laws and regulations. The Employee Relations Manager will provide consulting and direction regarding employee relations issues to HR colleagues, leaders, managers and employees. The position will work with HR leaders, in-house and outside counsel to appropriately handle employment related complaints, identify concerns and take corrective and/or preventative action as needed. This is an onsite opportunity M-F located at our World Headquarters in Kansas City, Missouri. While we have flexible work options, we do not have a hybrid or remote workforce.

  • Develop and implement employee relations policies, procedures and programs in consultation with HR leadership and other stakeholders

  • Provide guidance and advice to managers and employees on employee relations matters, including conflict resolution, performance management, discipline and termination.

  • Lead internal investigations of employee complaints, including harassment, discrimination, retaliation, ethics/compliance and other employment related matters; recommend solutions and assist with facilitation of resolution.

  • Collaborate with legal counsel and HR colleagues to ensure compliance with employment laws and regulations

  • Partner with business and HR leaders and other stakeholders to align employee relations procedures and programs to business objectives and company culture.

  • Capture and analyze data to identify trends in employee relations matters and recommend strategies to address them proactively.

  • Develop and deliver training programs to managers and employees on employee relations topics.

  • Manage the company’s response to unemployment claims, federal and/or state agency charges and other legal proceedings related to employee relations matters.

  • Apply policies and procedures consistently in guiding/consulting or reviewing complex employee relations concerns.

  • Coach employees and managers on work-related issues and make recommendations to help resolve complex and unique employment matters.

  • Provide HR policy guidance and interpretation of policies and procedures. Recommend updates to policies and procedures as appropriate.

  • Manage the company’s response to unemployment claims, including participation in hearings.

  • Maximize utilization of technology and other tools available for employee relations matters including performance management and work environment trends; make recommendations for additional or improved solutions.

  • Evaluate, create and/or improve work processes related to the employee relations function

  • Maintain knowledge of current and new employment related laws and regulations, as well as best practices in employee relations.

  • Promote an inclusive workplace environment that encourages respect, professionalism, open communication and is free from discriminatory and/or harassing behavior.

  • Responsible for the recruitment, development, training, and retention of staff.

  • Responsible for conducting performance evaluations for department staff.

  • Provide leadership, guidance, and instruction to the department.

  • Responsible for interpreting the organization's policies, purposes, and goals to staff.

  • Responsible for overall QA/QC process adherence.

  • Enforce compliance with company and site safety policies.

  • Responsible for diversity initiatives.

  • Performs other duties as assigned

Qualifications

  • Bachelor Degree in human resource management, business administration or other related field and 8 years of relevant experience handling employee relations matters within a human resources department required.

  • Must have previous experience working with federal, state and local enforcement agencies on employment-related complaints.

  • Experience with employment-related litigation preferred.

  • Previous experience managing people and/or leading teams preferred.

  • Previous experience in the A/E/C industry preferred.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

  • Strong conflict resolution skills and demonstrated ability to effectively coach other on resolving conflict.

  • Excellent at delivering feedback and providing effective coaching to employees, managers and executives.

  • Thorough understanding of federal, state and local employment laws and regulations. Demonstrated ability to interpret and apply employment-related laws and regulations to employee relations matters, policies, processes and procedures.

  • Ability to remain tactful, calm and persuasive in controversial and/or confrontational situations.

  • Ability to negotiate and influence others.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • Ability to think critically and strategically to solve problems with practical solutions.

  • Ability to coordinate, prioritize, and balance multiple issues and assignments simultaneously.
