This Opportunity
WSP is currently initiating a search for a Lead Environmental Engineer for our Kansas City, MO office. Be involved in projects with our Earth & Environment Team and be a part of a growing organization that meets our client’s objectives and solves their challenges.
Provides high level technical assistance and guidance multi-site/phase environmental engineering work processes, due diligence, investigation, remediation, impact assessment, and environmental permitting projects. Develops processes and infrastructure relating to hazardous or solid waste disposal, air emission sources, pollution control, and preserving the environment. Substantiates reports and documentation to advise on field conditions, movement, and outcome of overall risks to ecological and human health. Assists project leadership with environmental site assessment, corrective strategies, classification of contaminated materials, development of process and infrastructure, and with recommendations to avert degradation of air, water, and land resources. Ensures that responsibilities are delivered and adhered to with a level of quality that meets or exceeds acceptable industry standards.
Your Impact
Provide guidance with data collection efforts for collecting, identifying, and compiling environmental data from samples of air, soil, water, sludge, and other matrices for projects, investigations, and surveys.
Perform professional environmental engineering work and conduct investigations and inspections of air emission sources, hazardous or solid waste facilities, water supply facilities, industrial and agricultural facilities, pollution sources and proposed and existing site conditions, water resources, and underground storage tanks to determine conformance with applicable rules, standards, and construction or operating permits.
Conduct environmental site assessments (Phase I and II).
Coordinate, review and approve infrastructure design plans, ensuring data integrity and work is compliant with all applicable codes, ordinances, and regulations.
Prepare data and visualizations such as tables, charts, reports, models, cross-sections, and other illustrations for the interpretation or presentation of more complex data, findings, or analyses.
Prepare comprehensive technical reports and presentations that explain research, findings, and recommendations to prevent, control, restore, clean-up, or address environmental issues or problems.
Analyze, evaluate, and interpret environmental data obtained during field investigations, offering input with developing action plans for moderate- to high-level threat mitigation activities.
Prepare and implement site Health and Safety Plans (HASPs).
Interact with regulatory agencies, subcontractors, and clients in a confident and professional manner.
Develop action plans for mid to larger-scale pollution, corrosion, hazardous waste, and environmental control project and programs.
Oversee and monitor cross-functional teams in executing mid-level projects including project budgets, tracking hours and expenses, and task completion.
Collaborate with professionals from a variety of disciplines to provide future ready solutions for clients.
Remain current in latest environmental engineering techniques.
Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources and conduct, and adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures.
Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.
Who You Are
Required Qualifications
Bachelor’s Degree in Environmental, Civil, Sanitary, Chemical, Industrial, Agricultural, or Public Health Engineering, or closely related discipline.
7 to 10 years of relevant post education experience in environmental engineering.
Engineer license required.
Proficient with engineering principles, practices, and methods and their application to environmental and project work-related issues.
Proficiency with the concepts of reducing and eliminating the use or generation of hazardous substances, processes, or products, and mitigation programs.
Well-defined specific knowledge of relevant environmental laws, regulations, compliance practices, and record-keeping requirements.
Well-developed ability to make technical computations and calculations involving the application of engineering principles, understanding plans and specifications and making factual comparisons to the appropriate regulations.
Experience in conducting Phase I and Phase II Environmental Site Assessments in accordance with ASTM guidelines and industry standards.
Ability to plan and conduct inspections and investigations on various aspects of the construction and design of facilities or structures, applying applicable regulations and policies
Highly effective interpersonal and communication skills when interacting with others, expressing ideas effectively and professionally to an engineering and non-engineering audience.
Demonstrated high-level of self-leadership with attention to detail, multi-tasking, and prioritization of responsibilities in a dynamic work environment.
Works independently with minimal oversight and provides guidance and leadership to junior team or project members, with strict adherence to QA/QC.
Highly proficient with technical writing, office automation and communication software, technology, math principles, predictive models, and tools.
Well-developed critical thinking and problem-solving skills required to apply technical knowledge to reach conclusions from testing results, data collation, statistical analysis and arriving at the most effective, economical, and logical solution.
Demonstrated effectiveness at coordinating and assertively directing subcontractors and others to consistently complete tasks safely and efficiently.
Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and ability to abide by WSP’s health, safety and drug/alcohol and harassment policies.
Ability to work schedules conducive to project-specific requirements that may extend beyond the typical workweek.
Occasional travel may be required depending on project-specific requirements.
Preferred Qualifications:
Master’s Degree in Engineering.
40-Hour OSHA Health & Safety Training (HAZWOPER) (29 CFR 1910.120) preferred.
Basic First Aid and Adult CPR training desired.
