Summary

The Principal Engineer is a professional level position independently leading highly technical and advanced engineering functions on a portfolio of assigned and/or self-initiated projects by applying standard mathematical, physical science, and/or engineering technologies. This role is recognized as primary authority in Engineering both internally and externally. This professional position could include individuals with experience or a degree in Chemical, Mechanical, Electrical, Materials, Aerospace, and/or Industrial Engineering.

About the Role

The Kansas City National Security Campus (KCNSC) is a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) facility managed and operated by Honeywell Federal Manufacturing & Technology (FM&T). This highly visible role as Center of Excellence (COE) leader for Manufacturing Process Technologies will provide the opportunity to showcase and grow both technical and organizational leadership. The successful candidate will develop and lead the technology strategy related to identifying and deploying innovative manufacturing systems and advanced process solutions, resulting in applied technologies deployed across the KCNSC. Additionally, the successful candidate in this role is expected to foster a culture of coaching and mentoring to develop and sustain the critical skills necessary to execute mission requirements.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Influences, at a portfolio level, emerging technologies, and incorporation of business trends.

  • Uses business knowledge and contacts to influence, evaluate, and prioritize business opportunities based on economic and technical factors.

  • May negotiate critical issues with other companies and organizations.

  • In partnership with management, directs the work of engineers, scientists, and technicians.

  • Champions substantial technical advances and innovation and/or improvement in existing or new technologies/procedures.

  • Recommends and directs the implementation of critical revisions in approaches and objectives.

  • Oversees the preparation of evaluation reports, analyzes discrepancies, and makes recommendations for product, test equipment, procedures and manufacturing or operating processes that improve productivity and quality and reduce flowtime.

  • Partners and interfaces with internal and external stakeholders at all levels to independently resolve complex design, development, production, and acceptance issues.

  • Guides and coordinates the evaluation and provides input regarding technological advances that improve productivity and quality, reduce flowtime, and enhance operational surety.

  • Provides mentorship, advice, and insight to other employees to ensure project and product compliance.

  • Responsible for work that involves long range and/or complex business objectives in field of expertise.

  • Exerts influence on the overall objectives and long-range goals of the business unit and organization.

  • In partnership with management, directs the work of engineers, scientists, and technicians.

You Must Have

  • Bachelor of Science degree (Chemical, Mechanical, Electrical, Aerospace, Materials, or Industrial) from an ABET accredited Engineering program or a Bachelor of Science degree in Physics from an accredited program.

  • Ten or more years of relevant experience in engineering in challenging and accountable engineering roles.

  • Four or more years experience leading research or development projects.

  • Ability to travel up to 20% of the time.

  • Ability to work on-site as directed by management and is determined by the needs of the business.

  • Regular and reliable attendance is an essential function of this job.

  • United States Citizenship, with the ability to obtain and maintain, a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) security clearance (some positions require additional DOE designations).

We Value

  • Advanced degree in engineering, science or applicable business discipline.

  • Demonstrated application as a recognized technical expert with technical insight in applying advanced knowledge in relative engineering and scientific fields.

  • Expert analytical skills and experience with mathematical computations and computer software applications.

  • Expert in the application of Six Sigma tools and methodology; Six Sigma Black Belt or Lean certification preferred.

  • Demonstrated expertise developing and implementing strategic initiatives.

  • Strong manufacturing experience applying technology advancements into rate production environment.

  • Experience negotiating with and successfully influencing National Labs and/or NNSA.

  • Strong communication skills - verbal, written and presentation.
