Kilgore College Associate Vice President of Student Learning in Kilgore, Texas

Position summary:

With approximately 6,000 students, Kilgore College is a student-centered, residential community college, characterized by excellence in teaching and learning. Kilgore College serves a rural population of students through dual credit, career and technical education and university transfer.  The Associate Vice President of Student Learning has overall responsibility for providing visionary leadership, direction, and administrative oversight for areas of Instruction including, but not limited to, Liberal and Fine Arts, Business, IT and STEM, Public Services and Industrial Technology, Dual Credit and Health Sciences. The AVPSL plays a key role in promoting excellence in teaching, fostering faculty development and supporting student completion. The AVPSL reports directly to the VP and works collaboratively with leadership across campus.

Position responsibilities:

  • Provides leadership for employees by exhibiting exemplary work habits, professional conduct, fiscal responsibility and personal professional development.

  • Contributes to the development of institutional goals, policies and outcomes as related to all areas of Instruction.

  • Directly supervises and evaluates Instructional Deans.

  • Fosters collaboration among stakeholders of different departments and divisions.

  • Helps ensure all programs and faculty meet standards for SACSCOC and programmatic accreditation.

  • Provides leadership and support for faculty development, including mentoring, professional development opportunities and promotion in rank processes.

  • Establishes a plan to support the recruitment and retention of highly qualified faculty.

  • In consultation with the Instructional Deans and Advisors, oversees the development, review and revision of curricula to meet academic standards, course scheduling, and student and industry needs.

  • Fosters a student-centered philosophy throughout the division and cultivates a culture of innovation to ensure programs and pedagogy effectively meet the evolving needs of KC students and the East Texas region.

  • Provides leadership in planning and decision-making based on data, institutional research and an awareness of emerging technology and trends.

  • Collaborates with Dean of Student Support Services and Retention to provide student supports from onboarding to credential completion.

  • Works with Instructional Deans to develop higher student completion rates and outcomes.

  • Works with Instructional Deans to evaluate the quality of academic programs to meet state standards and industry needs by utilizing student learning outcomes, placement and graduation rates, licensure results and other appropriate metrics.

  • Position requires after hours and weekend activities.

  • Other duties as assigned.

    Minimum Position Requirements:

  • Earned doctorate in academic field, higher education or related field from an accredited college or university.

  • Five years of full-time faculty experience in higher education.

  • At least 3 years of progressive administrative experience in higher education.

  • Demonstrated understanding of, and a commitment to a rural community college mission and purpose; teaching and learning; high academic standards, and student success.

  • Must have excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal.

  • Be able to work with little supervision and to work professionally and courteously with a diverse student and employee population.

    Preferred Qualifications:

  • Dean level experience or above at a community college.

  • Understanding of House Bill 8 funding model for the state of Texas

    Supervisory Responsibilities:

    Physical Demands and Work Environment:

  • Work is normally performed in a typical interior/office and classroom environment

  • No or very limited exposure to physical risk.

    Safety:

    Provide resources for safe operation of units. Create and support workplace safety.

    Salary & Benefits: 

  • 36-hour work week for a healthy work life balance as well generous paid leave time.

  • Tuition scholarships are for the employee and dependent children. 

  • Compensation for this 12-month position will commensurate with experience. 

    Kilgore College does not participate in the federal Social Security program. As a result, employees/retirees of the college are subject to the federal Windfall Elimination Provision (WEP) and possibly the Government Pension Offset (GPO) laws.
