The Chemical Engineer II performs engineering work dealing with the daily pilot plant operations, communicating chemical process runs with operators, development of process technology for capital projects, improving pilot plant safety & reliability and/or testing new equipment concepts. This role also has responsibility for the pilot plant and boiler house DCS systems and associated programming and configuration. Position requires daily presence in the pilot operating units and a strong desire to work hands-on with pilot plant operators

Key Activities

Operations (35%)

  • Coordinates pilot plant schedule with R&D and Process Technology teams and provides support to daily activities in executing BU pilot programs and campaigns.

  • Creates and maintains operating procedures, manuals and runsheets.

  • Leads advanced troubleshooting and appropriate root-cause analysis and accountable for implementation of associated corrective actions.

  • Applies statistical methods and Six Sigma tools to analyze campaign data, optimize operations, identify improvement opportunities and implement solutions to deliver value to BU customers.

  • Understands engineering fundamentals and can apply to business or site specific technology, equipment, unit operations and control technology.

Process and Projects (35%)

  • Understands pilot plant process technology, equipment, unit operations, and control technology and looks for opportunities to apply new technology to improve existing processes.

  • Communicates technical information and issues to pilot plant leadership and BU Process Technology teams; identifies and collaborates with external resources.

  • Maintains and configures the pilot plant and boiler house process control system and manages recipe management system.

  • Manages assigned capital projects, budgets and execution. Leads project commissioning and start-up activities for assigned projects.

  • Supervises external contractors and service providers to ensure design/work meets the need.

  • Coordinates commissioning and start-up activities to ensure effective implementation of projects.

  • Develop solutions to a variety of technical challenges while supporting pilot scale development programs/projects for a variety of business units.

  • Ensure that area improvements meet or exceed all corporate expectations, guidelines, and procedural criteria.

  • Interact effectively with a variety of support resources including engineers, R&D scientists, safety, maintenance, and contractors.

Safety & Environmental (20%)

  • Understands and applies safety and environmental regulations applicable to the assignment. Has a working knowledge of the process safety management standard and is responsible for resolving issues identified in audits.

  • Leads Management of Change, Pre Startup Safety Reviews, and Incident Investigations and is responsible for implementation of associated action items.

  • Coordinates and participates as the pilot plant representative for Process (and Dust) Hazard Analyses and helps to generate/manage resulting action items.

Talent & Engagement (10%)

  • Supports the recruiting process for entry-level engineers and may perform role of intern or co-op supervisor.

  • Looks for opportunities to increase skills, attends training, and stays current with trends in industry.

  • Facilitates development of operators through training and day to day interactions

Qualifications and Education Required

  • Bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering.

  • Minimum 2 years experience in chemical manufacturing environment in a progressive role.

  • Green Belt certification preferred.

Competencies -Knowledge Skills & Abilities

  • Understands chemical process technology, unit operations, and control technology. Advancing to competency in chemical process modelling and internal methods and tools.

  • Basic use of engineering methods and tools. Applies engineering fundamentals and increasing know-how to problem solving and troubleshooting.

  • Applies six sigma tools for data analysis to identify opportunities in the process advancing to efficient use of six sigma tools in the normal work process.

  • Shows technical leadership in assigned projects advancing to larger leadership footprints across multiple processes.

  • Develops and implements solutions to close compliance items, competent in tracking tools and advancing to cause analysis.

  • Participates in chemical process PHA and advancing to leader or advanced participant. Develops understanding of safety critical safeguard calculations. Basic understanding of PSM and RMP.

  • Project team member; supports chemical process capital projects by gathering and providing data.

  • Messaging and written reporting to departmental audience advancing to manufacturing site level in higher grades.

  • Competently networks within department advancing to networks across business unit/support functions. Mentors less experienced engineers within the department.

  • Contributes to process specific intellectual property.

  • Assists in completion of CSR (ESG) deliverables for projects and plant support programs. Contributes to climate change roadmap.

  • Technically savvy, with chemical process simulation skills in digital manufacturing tools such as programming historians or process control systems. Developed expertise in one or more digital tools.

  • Application of historian data and multiple manufacturing digital tools, chemical process simulation and databases, control at plant level with tangible results.
