Amazon MFG Engineer-Integration, Project Kuiper in Kirkland, Washington

Project Kuiper is an initiative to increase global broadband access through a constellation of 3,236 satellites in low Earth orbit (LEO). Its mission is to bring fast, affordable broadband to unserved and underserved communities around the world. Project Kuiper will help close the digital divide by delivering fast, affordable broadband to a wide range of customers, including consumers, businesses, government agencies, and other organizations operating in places without reliable connectivity.

This position provides manufacturing engineering ownership of integrated and tested assemblies for the project Kuiper satellite program. You will be supporting new satellite assemblies early in the design phase, providing critical design for manufacturability input and supporting testing of these assemblies, while developing and implementing the plan to move from design/test into build/production.

Key job responsibilities

  • Design space hardware production processes and production lines

  • Experience with equipment design, procurement, installation, and qualification

  • Work with supply chain partners to manage critical vendors

  • Material flow planning and manufacturing process definition with minimal existing definition

  • Ability to support space hardware testing, including tooling design and data analysis

  • Assembly, Integration, and Test takt time & cost optimization planning

  • Design for Manufacturability review and sign off for design release

  • Design and procure tooling to support manufacturing operations

  • Troubleshoot production issues in a timely manner

  • Work with cross functional teams to solve production issues

Export Control Requirement:

A day in the life

This role will require a thorough understanding of electro-mechanical assembly processes, acceptance testing, and triage issues. You will own and coordinate integration work, produce build documentation, troubleshoot issues, and ensure production operations run smoothly. Transitioning into a production environment, you will strive to produce assemblies for the lowest possible cost and highest possible quality. This will include root causing problems that occur for the assembly to keep builds on schedule while also working on efficiency gains through tooling, automation, or design and process changes. You will work closely with design, tooling, dynamics, thermal, and electrical engineering to deliver on these objectives.

Basic Qualifications

  • 3+ years of experience developing, building, and testing mechanical assemblies

  • Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, material science, physics or equivalent

Preferred Qualifications

  • 2+ years of experience planning and driving process development campaigns

  • Experience with integrated and mechanical assemblies, including troubleshooting and root cause analysis of testing, processing, and assembly failures

  • Experience with bringing up a production facility from early product design/concept and

  • Cross-functional communication – comfortable evangelizing ideas and concerns clearly and persuasively, in both verbal and written forms

  • Successful in taking complicated build and design requirements and developing them into clear and concise build and test instructions and implementing appropriate and useful quality standards and procedures

  • Experience working with RF systems and/or fiber optics

Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across several US geographic markets. The base pay for this position ranges from $105,600/year in our lowest geographic market up to $185,000/year in our highest geographic market. Pay is based on a number of factors including market location and may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Amazon is a total compensation company.
