Summary:

To provide a therapeutic environment and facilitate on-going treatment for persons with mental illness in an inpatient or correctional setting; implement treatment plans and monitor outcome of goals; perform related work.

Responsibilities:

  • These positions conduct therapeutic activities and co-facilitate group therapy sessions with patients who require intense inpatient psychiatric care. This may involve skills training, psychosocial rehabilitation activities, behavior management, symptom management, and anger management.

  • They interact with patients on a one-to-one basis and in group settings to encourage appropriate behavior and provide input into developing and changing patient treatment plans. This work involves observing signs of mental and physical illness; patient's responses to treatment; personal hygiene activities; and the individual's behavior and interaction with others. This can involve the application of protective devices or mechanical restraints. Incumbents may participate in therapeutic activities with patients on and off the facility property to increase their independence.

  • They integrate daily living tasks with treatment goals and maintain a therapeutic environment; encourage and motivate patients; foster increased patient self-esteem through teaching and role modeling; facilitate problem solving; record observations of individual and group behavior; and chart treatment progress.

  • The essence of this job is to have patients become as self-sufficient as possible and to function responsibly in societal or other settings appropriate for the patient served.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Some knowledge of: Human services to include psychology, nursing, or social work. Typically gained through at least six months of work experience in dual diagnosis, behavioral interventions, mental health disorders and medications, psychiatric symptoms or therapeutic communications or at least six months of work experience providing treatment services for the mentally ill.
