Job Title:

Locomotive Weight Engineer

Key Job Elements:

• Work in a team environment as part of Progress Rail’s Locomotive Traction Systems Group;

• Perform analysis of locomotive clearance study, curve study, weight study;

• Work with engineering component owners, vendors to get components weights;

• Assignment will include providing production support and problem resolution to ensure locomotive weights and clearances meets customer and internal design intent;

• Assists in implementing engineering changes, field modifications;

• Demonstrate compliance of designs to project requirements through analytical or experimental methods;

• Provide technical direction to support personnel;

• Works with engineering functions, suppliers, plant personnel and others to implement cost reduction, methods improvement, product improvements, and to support build programs;

• Coordinate and consults with departments outside engineering such as manufacturing, purchasing, SQE team, vendors;

• Regular contact with others outside the work group;

• Travel as necessary, and flexibility to work on special assignments as required.

Qualifications and Experience:

Required

• Basic 3D modeling and PLM software experience;

• Able to analyze large sets of date (experience with statistics is a plus);

• Proficient with Microsoft Excel (ability to write macros is a plus);

• Ability to read, interpret, and apply U.S. and international standards;

• Highly detail-oriented;

• Strong personal skills and ability to work in groups;

• Ability to travel as required.

Preferred:

• Knowledge of rail vehicles (locomotives preferred);

• Knowledge or experience in metrology;

• Experience with the use, installation or maintenance of weight measuring equipment;

• Familiarity with rail-specific standards (FRA, AAR, EN, AS/RISSB, etc.);

• Experience with using, maintaining, or creating databases.

Essential and Physical Activities Functions

• Strength – Position typically involves work in an office environment with occasional visits to an industrial environment. Frequent/constant sitting. Occasional standing and walking. Occasional light to medium-level lifting or carrying (up to 30 pounds);

• Motion – Position regularly requires standard motions associated with working in an office environment. Depending on assigned project, position may occasionally require motions involved in an industrial working environment, including some low to intense levels of pushing, pulling, climbing, balancing, crouching, stooping, kneeling, reaching, grasping;

• Vision/Hearing Requirements – Frequent verbal communications, including both talking and hearing;

• Work Environment – Position is typically located in an office environment with occasional visits to an industrial environment which may include a non-temperature-controlled environment, as well as exposure to noise (85+ decibels), occasional exposure to temperature changes, heavy machinery and other hazardous working conditions requiring the use of PPE. Position may require travel as necessary, both domestic and international;

• Emotional Demands – Very high level of responsibility. Must be able to coordinate diverse aspects of a project. Requires significant interpersonal skills while sustaining very high standards;

• Safety – Position may occasionally require the use of Personal Protective Equipment during visits to industrial areas.

Summary Pay Range:

$64,272.00 to $119,760.00

Compensation and benefits offered may vary depending on multiple individualized factors, job level, market location, job-related knowledge, skills, individual performance, and experience. Please note that salary is only one component of total compensation at Progress Rail Services.
