Position Summary

The SeniorTooling Engineer is responsible to manage & support Structural & Mechansims Tooling Engineers on all tooling and tooling build timelines (Tool Tracker) to ensure consistently high-quality components are produced on time and cost effectively for all North America Structural & Mechanisms Product Divisions. The Senior Tooling Engineer is expected to ensure the most up to date technologies are utilized to continuously improve our product, meeting our customer’s expectations and promote innovations, continous improvements to all Structural Product divisions. The Senior Tooling Engineer has input into the short- and long-term strategic tooling plans.The Senior tooling engineer will also manage and lead Magna’s Center of Excellence (C.O.E.) to provide best practices in the metal forming section for all forming sections. Maintain and improve documents on the C.O.E.The Senior Tooling Engineer is responsible for new tooling/fixture buy off at vendors and will also assist production assembly tooling when required.The Senior Tooling Engineer will participate & lead the design and costing activities in N.B.D.(New Buisness Development). The senior tooling engineer will analyse and approve tool strip layouts for optimization of material & forming simulations. The Senior Tooling Engineer will support all S.P. divisions in North America.

The Senior Tooling Engineer will also support Magna Seating Columbus when required.

REQUIRED SKILLS/EXPERIENCE:

  • Minimum of five (5) years manufacturing experience in the automotive industry. Familiar with metal fabricating, assembly processes and related tooling

  • Minimum 5 years post Graduation/apprenticeship experience in a press shop for metal forming.

  • Degree in Mechanical Engineering or Community College graduate technical and/or a certified apprenticeship in tool & die

  • Knowledge of progressive dies, transfer dies, blank forming, tube forming, roll forming.

  • Capability and knowledge of design in tooling.

  • Knowledge of laser/MIG tooling; Advanced GD&T

  • Effective communication and presentation skills (verbal and written)

  • Team-oriented approach to problem solving.

  • Demonstrated planning and system implementation ability.

  • Proficiency in related computer software (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, MS Project, VISI, solid works, Auto CAD)

DUTIES:

  • Ensure that budgets and objectives are achieved and/or exceeded with respect to tooling.

  • Responsible for forecasting and budgeting related to tooling NBD.

  • Co-ordinates with other departments and facilities the implementation, development, and improvement of new and old programs tooling requirements

  • Co-ordinates the fabrication of all required tooling and equipment to support old and new programs.

  • Coordinates and implements engineering changes on new and existing tooled programs.

  • Develop and manages a tooling tracker and reports out accordingly with the tooling engineer from S.P. divisions.

  • Acts as technical contact for vendors on tooling issues.

  • Manages, develops, and maintains all tooling progress reports.

  • Coordinates FMEA on all new tooling

  • Reviews tooling blank size for new business for optimization of material.

  • Ensures company guidelines for part scrap are adhered to during tooling design process.

  • Work with purchasing on quoted tooling at release of new business & Engineering changes.

  • Work with Group Costing on New Business for optimization of tooling.

  • Work daily with production quality issues pertaining to stampings or sub- assemblies, & assembly tooling.

  • Work with Program Manager on all programs and provide input when required.

  • Ensure PPAP’s are achieved on time.

  • Approve and sign off on all metal forming tooling and gauges.

  • Support Manufacturing Engineering at MSC for assembly & weld tooling.

  • Support vendors when required.

  • Support Maintenance with Continuous Improvement for assembly tooling.

  • Support Maintenance to develop & improve P.M.’s for all assembly tooling.

  • Quote tooling (Engineering changes) and piece price internally by developing process and strip layouts.

  • Send RFQ’s to vendors and participate in decisions when sourcing.
