Legal Counsel, Corporate Engagement
Alliance Defending Freedom is looking for a highly professional Legal Counsel to join us in our Lansdowne, VA office. This position promotes the strategic objectives of ADF’s corporate engagement team. Legal Counsel will support the team’s efforts to urge corporations to respect free speech, religious freedom, life, and the foundational institutions of marriage and family. Legal Counsel will undertake multiple projects including legal research and writing, public speaking, and relationship building. Legal Counsel will interact with business leaders, Allied Attorneys, Blackstone Fellows, and various ADF teams to develop programs and resources to advance the team’s strategic objectives. Legal Counsel will conduct pioneering legal research that results in litigation and legislative solutions that advance the team’s objectives. This position requires someone who has strong communication skills, clear writing abilities, and public speaking skills, is creative and innovative, and enjoys a fast work pace.
Your Essential Responsibilities:
In this position, you will:
Conduct complex legal research and analysis concerning legislative, regulatory, and litigation opportunities for achieving the aims of ADF’s corporate engagement efforts
Interface with potential clients who have been harmed by anti-speech and anti-religious corporate policies and behavior; analyze and interpret laws, rulings, and regulations for individuals and organizations
Conduct legal and topical research and produce memos, articles, and white papers on business-related topics (DEI; religious accommodation; workplace culture; ESG and CSR, Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, etc.)
Assist in developing, implementing, and advancing successful and innovative corporate engagement strategies that neutralize mounting corporate hostility toward people of faith and encourage corporations to respect free speech, religious freedom, and life
Assist in developing a durable network of ideologically aligned directors, officers, general counsels, and other strategically placed employees at secular businesses, with a focus on Fortune 1000 companies
Assist in developing communication strategies and content for the Fortune 1000 business audience and work with internal teams to execute on that strategy
Advocate and coordinate support for the positions of ADF on governmental policies, regulations, and legislation that intersect with ADF’s corporate engagement objectives
Advise faith-based and secular businesses on legal inquiries that fall within ADF’s scope
Assist in the development of testimony, legislation, position papers, and reports
Handle media interviews and public speaking engagements
Work collaboratively within the ADF team and with external allies

Skills you need to succeed:
Knowledge of:
Religious freedom and constitutional issues related to the ADF mission
Current political environment and on-going strategic implications that affect the corporate engagement efforts of ADF
ADF’s mission and strategic objectives
Demonstrated proficiency in:
High-level and effective interpersonal skills, including ability to establish and maintain effective broad-range working relationships, and proven ability to work independently and collaboratively on internal and external teams
Navigating the complex structure of the legislative branch to produce desired results
Flexibility and effectiveness in handling multiple and complex projects simultaneously under stringent timeframes and changing conditions
Willingness to work in a frenetic and fluid environment
Strong computer skills including Microsoft Office Word, and Outlook
Strong time management skills
Strong organizational skills
Excellent analytical skills
Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills

Education and/or experience:
Bachelor's degree in Political Science, Public Affairs, or related field or an equivalent combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge and skills may be obtained
J.D., and licensed to practice law in relevant jurisdiction
