Job Description:

75% Advising and Immigration Case Management

  • Interprets and applies federal immigration regulations and policies to advise prospective and current employees on appropriate immigration processes, maintaining immigration status, visa application, entry to the U. S. and all matters related to non-immigrant and immigrant statuses including H-1B, TN, O-1, permanent residency.

  • Advises and collaborates with KU units to prepare KU sponsored immigration cases (i. e. H-1B, TN, O-1, permanent residency) in compliance with federal regulations, policies, and procedures including all relevant notice, wage analysis, labor condition application requirements.

  • Completes all related payment and billing activities with assigned case load.

  • Provides compliance guidance, advising, and training to KU hiring and employing units as well as HRM colleagues regarding immigration regulations and work authorization documents.

  • Maintains an up-to-date knowledge of immigration regulations, policies, procedures, executive orders, proposed rules and other relevant information affecting immigration sponsorship and advising.

  • Liaise with Department of Homeland Security (USCIS, ICE, and CBP), Department of Labor, and Department of State on case matters and site visits.

  • Provides advising on matters related to/affected by employees immigration statuses including SSN, SAVE, DMV, E-Verify, I-9, etc.

  • Works with Immigration Advisor Senior and outside counsel regarding cases with complexity. Engages with internal and external university stakeholders regarding compliance activities related to immigration and employment.

  • Contributes to process and policy development or design.

  • Manage relationships with new and current employees and units, providing updates, answering questions, addressing concerns and providing guidance throughout the process.

15% Record and System Maintenance

  • Maintain up to date records, case files and documentation in compliance with confidentiality and privacy regulations.

  • Reviews and maintains communications and intake process for case preparation and filing.

10% Other Duties as Assigned

  • Other duties as assigned to support international employment area needs.

  • Continued engagement in professional development to promote learning and growth.

Required Qualifications:

  1. Master’s Degree or Bachelor’s degree plus 1 year of directly related experience including international student, scholar, or employee immigration advising or immigration paralegal experience

  2. Excellent written and spoken communication skills as evidenced by application materials.

  3. Prior work experience requiring attention to detail.

  4. Demonstrated experience in analyzing complex information and applying critical thinking through work history.

  5. Experience communicating with non-native speakers of English as evidenced by application materials.

  6. Demonstrated experience working with confidential information.

Preferred Qualifications:

  1. Working knowledge of immigration regulations, department of labor regulations, and university immigration sponsorship.

  2. Degree emphasis in international education, international affairs, public policy, political science, or foreign language/area studies.

  3. Ability to assess complex immigration cases, identifying solutions, and providing strategic advice to current or future employees.

  4. Demonstrated ability to work independently with minimal supervision, manage multiple priorities, and meet deadlines with a high level of customer service.

Position Overview:

Under the direction of the International Advisor Senior the International Advisor provides immigration advising to current and prospective international employees, hiring and employing units, and HR colleagues. Reviews and analyzes employment opportunities for prospective immigration sponsorship. Represents HR to constituents across the University of Kansas, federal government agencies and prospective employees. Prepares and files KU sponsored immigration petitions according to immigration regulations, policies, and procedures. Liaises with relevant federal government agencies (Department of Labor, Department of Homeland Security, and Department of State). Ensures compliance with relevant regulations and maintains necessary records and documentation.
