Job Description:
25% Editing
Prepare manuscripts for publication by undertaking content and mechanical editing of accepted manuscripts.
Review and format text, images, and graphics for publication.
20% Submissions Management
Manage the submission of scholarly articles via an online portal, including their distribution to relevant members of the editorial collegium.
Maintain and update the online portal and submission system as needed, ensuring its ease of use for authors and reviewers.
Communicate with authors and potential reviewers throughout the submission and review process.
Solicit and gather external evaluations, in coordination with editorial collegium.
20% Publication and Production Management
Work with authors and the journal’s publisher to ensure the timely publication of articles and issues.
Coordinate between authors and the journal publisher’s production team (typesetters, compositors, licensing agents) as needed during the publication and post-production process.
20% Journal Management
Under the direction of the journal’s Editor, maintain records of the journal’s finances and regularly update the Editor regarding journal accounts.
Track journal statistics in coordination with the publisher and utilize bibliometrics to identify ways to reach new audiences.
Train and supervise a part-time graduate student editorial assistant who, in consultation with the editorial collegium, runs a considerable book-review operation, from determining which books to review, through solicitation of reviewers and submission of reviews, to their initial editing, formatting for publication, and production. The Managing Editor must regularly monitor all book review operations and must sign off on all copy-editing prior to production.
Manage the journal’s office, ensuring an effective workspace and maintaining necessary supplies.
15% External Communications and Publicity
Act as the primary journal contact and representative to the publisher’s production and management teams in all matters relating to published content.
Field requests from readers, subscribers, and institutional partners.
Communicate with the journal’s editorial board as needed.
Maintain and update the journal’s website, online resources, and social media accounts.

Required Qualifications:
MA in History, Literature, Political Science, Russian and Eurasian Studies, or a related field, with a focus on Russia and Eurasia.
High working proficiency in Russian language, as demonstrated by application materials.
At least three years of relevant professional experience in scholarly publishing, including significant experience editing, copyediting, and corresponding with authors and reviewers.
Work experience requiring excellent organizational and record-keeping skills, as evidenced by application materials.

Preferred Qualifications:
PhD in History, Literature, Political Science, Russian and Eurasian Studies, or a related field, with a focus on Russia and Eurasia.

Experience managing and maintaining and online submission portal, as evidenced by application materials.
Experience in web design and/or digital production, as evidenced by application materials.
Position Overview:
The Managing Editor enjoys a full-time staff appointment through KU CREES and oversees the editing, publication, and operations of The Russian Review, which ranks among the oldest and most widely read journals of Russian and Eurasian studies in the world. The Managing Editor reports to Professor Erik Scott, Editor of the journal, but is expected to work independently to manage submissions, prepare manuscripts for publication, and ensure timely production of the journal.
