Dartmouth Health Maxillofacial Surgical Technician Coordinator (per diem) in Lebanon, New Hampshire

Overview

Acts as a member of the surgical team by coordinating the scheduling of patients to the section as well as acting in an assisting capacity during office visits and procedures. Ensures that the room is properly set up and that the surgeon has all the materials necessary for each patient. Provides direct patient care within the scope of certification and/or licensure.

Responsibilities

  • Monitors and assesses patients before, during and after sedation procedures.

  • Performs telephone triage. Follows up with patients and composes proper documentation in CIS.

  • Shares in the surgical suite preparation. Uses and maintains specialized equipment and supplies used for specific surgical procedures.

  • Obtains case carts, supplies, and equipment.

  • Checks emergency case carts daily.

  • Maintains anesthesia specialty carts (pediatric, emergency airway, cardiac).

  • Cleans, maintains, and sets up anesthesia equipment.

  • Prepares special infusion equipment (IV's).

  • Opens sterile supplies.

  • Performs room clean-up using standards of surgical suite sanitation.

  • Maintains par levels of non-controlled medications for both anesthesia and intraoperative use.

  • Prepares surgical chairs for various specialty procedures.

  • Anticipates the needs of the surgeon to expedite procedures. Utilizes knowledge of surgical instrumentation and step-by-step sequences for surgical procedures.

  • Keeps operative sites clear during procedures by the use of suction devices, water sprays, cotton rolls and holders and/or by retraction.

  • Prepares impressions, photographs and x-rays, as needed.

  • Monitors and removes IV's, changes dressings and removes sutures.

  • Maintains established par levels for nursing specialty carts and suture carts and supply of personal protective equipment (lasers, procedures). Maintains latex free cart.

  • Sterilizes supplies by operation of steam autoclave.

  • Ensures availability of O2.

  • Participates in the positioning of patients for surgical procedures. Participates in the transfer of patients to stretchers, beds, operating chairs/tables and/or the recovery room area. Participates in patient skin prep.

  • Escorts patient families from the surgical area after the induction of anesthesia. Provides custodial care to patients in preoperative holding area. Checks chart for proper consent forms.

  • Participates in providing patient education to the sections' patients using methods appropriate to both the content and the person being educated.

  • Supervises, trains, and orients new tech employees. Schedules their day-to-day work. Evaluates employee performance and encourages further education. Handles performance problems up to and including termination, which if necessary, is properly coordinated with the Practice Manager and Human Resources.

  • Assists in identifying and developing new methodologies or processes for delivering services more effectively and efficiently.

  • Develops the procedure manual for the section and ensures that it is properly maintained. Develops procedure preference cards for all providers assigned to the section and keeps them current.

  • Reviews physician schedules in advance to anticipate and correct problem areas

  • Orders routine clinical supplies and recommends changes in par level supply orders. Coordinates special equipment purchases and supplier visits to the section to discuss equipment and/or medication needs.

  • Performs other duties as required or assigned.

Qualifications

  • High school graduate required.

  • One year of surgical experience in a maxillofacial surgeon’s office desired.

  • Superior organizational skills and self-motivation required.

  • Previous lead or supervisory experience highly preferred.

Required Licensure/Certifications

  • Certified Dental Assistant licensure

  • BLS certification

  • Laser certification required within 30 days of employment.

  • AAOMS Anesthesia Assistant Certification and Radiology Certification required within one year of employment.

  • Currently Registered with the New Hampshire Board of Registration for Medical Technicians
