International Chief Designer in Lisle, Illinois

Position Overview

It’s an exciting time to be at International! We are seeking an experienced Chief Industrial Designer to join the International R&D team. As part of the Traton Group, our team is involved with the development of emerging technologies, electrification, autonomous driving, and sustainability to create the future of the commercial truck and bus industry.

As Chief Industrial Designer, you will be an integral part of the team helping to transform the industry. Come be a part of our rich history in Innovation and Design.

Responsibilities

  • Oversees the creation and development of the look of products including shape, color, and size. Focuses on product external appearance rather than the internal functionality.

  • Evaluates feasibility of design ideas, based on factors such as appearance, safety, function, serviceability, budget, production costs/methods and market characteristics.

  • Oversees projects to ensure they meet appearance, cost, quality, and timing deliverables within the program scope. Determine timing, budget, and staffing needs for all projects.

  • Operate in a fast paced, dynamic, and evolving environment

  • Have a solid background of the current product portfolio of International

  • Know and understand the competition and future trends

  • Understand future trends in product design to forecast application to International products

  • Possess the ability for 2D sketching and basic 3D digital modeling for concept development and/or exploration

  • Utilize both verbal and visual presentation skills to present to upper management to support concepts

  • Possess the appropriate skills to communicate and work with intra-studio disciplines—digital and physical modeling staff

  • Participate in cross-functional team meetings relating to all projects

  • Build the team environment and oversee team members in problem solving

  • Assume ownership for all project deliverables and pro-actively report progress to upper management

  • Assume responsibility for multiple projects with equal performance

  • Ability to think outside the box with viability

  • Ability to present to Senior Management

  • Represent Industrial Design in SMT

  • Take the lead in organizing and leading meetings with other SMT members

  • Participate in up-front project planning and timing

  • Utilize technical knowledge and skills to mentor other Industrial Design staff to elevate the effectiveness of R&D

  • Organize weekly design reviews and determine content of items to be reviewed

  • Make recommendations to Director of Design for design direction of projects

  • Be detail oriented and self-motivated

  • Have excellent communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills

  • Work effectively in a team environment

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree

  • At least 12 years of industrial design experience

  • 6 years of management experience

OR

  • Master's degree

  • At least 10 years of industrial design experience

  • 6 years of management experience

OR

  • At least 14 years of industrial design experience

  • 6 years of management experience

Additional Requirements

  • Qualified candidates, excluding current International Motors employees, must be legally authorized on an unrestricted basis (US Citizen, Legal Permanent Resident, Refugee or Asylee) to be employed in the United States. International Motors does not anticipate providing employment related work sponsorship for this position (e.g., H-1B status)

Desired Skills

  • Written, verbal communication/documentation

  • Manual 2D sketching skills

  • Competency in MS Office Suite, Adobe Photoshop, and Illustrator

  • Rendering software knowledge (VRED preferred)

  • 3D digital modeling skills in Alias or equivalent
