Position Summary

The Department of Workforce Services Assistant Controller Provides supervisory guidance to a subordinate accounting supervisory and professional staff by establishing work plans and staff assignments, resolving difficult or complex problems, and evaluating employee performance. Reviews general ledger and subsidiary accounts to verify balances and processing of year end closing. Allocates funds for new and existing accounts when establishing and maintaining general ledge r on department operations. Research outstanding checks and balances for preparation of report for unclaimed property . Tracks and reconciles unexpended accounts. Evaluates current and future data processing needs related to quality control and reporting procedures. Prepares financia l reports, budget projections, special project costs, expenditure analysis, and federal grant reports. Provides technical assistance to departmental officials by interpreting data and details of various accounting reports.

Education and Professional Work Experience

Minimum Qualifications

The formal education equivalent of a bachelor’s degree with a major in accounting, or finance; plus, four years of experience in accounting including two years in a managerial or supervisory capacity. Additional requirements determined by the agency for recruiting purposes require review and approval by the Office of Personnel Management .

  • A b i l ity to evaluate the operation of the accounting system and recommend modifications.

  • Ability to write proposals, justifications, and policies .

    Job Responsibilities and Expected Results

    Key Business Processes/Duties

  • Oversees the federal grants and cash units.

  • Reviews submissions for 9130s, 9178 and other federal reports.

  • Completes grant application process.

  • Reconciles cash draws to expenditures using AASIS and Cost Allocation.

  • Assist with preparing the monthly cost allocation for the division.

  • Supervise a small to medium size staff.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Summary

The Assistant Controller is responsible for maintaining the organizational general ledger, chart of accounts, and overseeing related work activities. This position is governed by state and federal laws, Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), and agency/institution policy.
