Summary
The Teacher Supervisor is responsible for supervising the teaching staff of an elementary, vocational, secondary, or middle school for the sensory impaired. This position is governed by state and federal laws and agency/institution policy.
Functions
Supervises a medium-sized professional and administrative support staff by interviewing and recommending for hire, making class and work assignments, providing counseling and training, monitoring work products, and observing and evaluating the performance of incumbents. Monitors the development and implementation of Individualized Education Plans and teacher's lesson plan books to ensure clarity, legality, effectiveness, and appropriateness to the individual student. Reviews grade books and observes classes to evaluate student progress and teaching effectiveness. Counsels with students and parents to resolve disciplinary and other problems or educational concerns. Conducts staff meetings and in-service training in instructional methods and techniques, such as Assertive Discipline or Classroom Management, as needed to assist teachers. Coordinates department activities including scheduling classes, planning and scheduling extra-curricular activities, and arranging for the placement and supervision of practicum students from the university training programs. Recommends approval of transportation and food requests and orders supplies, equipment, and services within allocated budget. Assists principal by coordinating with other school personnel, such as dormitory staff, school counselor, and psychological examiner, as well as other agencies, in regard to services provided to school's students. Performs other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Knowledge of supervisory practices and procedures. Knowledge of a subject matter being taught. Knowledge of educational planning and the principles and techniques of teaching sensory-impaired persons. Ability to develop and teach classes for the hearing or visually impaired. Ability to evaluate students' progress and determine effectiveness of teaching methods. Ability to plan, organize, and oversee the work of subordinates. Ability to interact with others to inform or discuss and resolve problems. Ability to teach communication systems, such as sign language or Braille required for instructing the sensory impaired.
Minimum Qualifications
The formal education equivalent of a master's degree in a teaching area or education related field; plus three years of teaching experience. Certified in a teaching area and in visually impaired or deaf education by the Arkansas Department of Education in accordance with ACA 6-17-401, 6-17-402, and 6-17-403. Additional requirements determined by the agency for recruiting purposes require review and approval by the Office of Personnel Management.
