ManTech Senior Precision Machinist in Livermore, California

Currently, ManTech is seeking a motivated, career and customer-oriented Senior Precision Machinist to join our team in Livermore, CA.

We develop and manufacture centimeter-scale components and assemblies, termed “targets”, with sub-micron precision, which are used for scientific research supporting various Department of Energy programs at national laboratories and universities. The research areas performed at the DOE laboratories include inertial confinement fusion, laboratory astrophysics and planetary physics, the behavior and properties of matter at extremely high densities and temperatures, and the interaction of radiation with materials at these extreme conditions.

The successful candidate will work as part of a team to manufacture target parts using precision machining techniques including programing and operating precision mills and diamond turning lathes. Precision machining of target components involves handling fragile, small components (from the scale of centimeters down to micrometers with sub-micrometer tolerances). The machined components are characterized with microscopy, interferometry, and optical coordinate metrology.

Responsibilities Include but are not limited to:

The responsibilities listed here are for ultimate job performance. Immediately performing all job responsibilities is not necessarily expected. Applicants should be able to demonstrate either previous applicable experience, or the ability to learn and acquire the skills necessary to perform all the responsibilities listed.

  • Work both independently and in coordination with others, including target fabrication engineers, to plan and execute machining of target components and in-process metrology.

  • Perform in-process metrology and inspections of components to verify specifications are met

  • Work from engineering drawings, schematics, and informal sketches to identify dimensional specifications and perform precision machining and metrology.

  • Set up and operate conventional CNC (Computer Numerical Control) lathes and mills to manufacture small precision parts and process fixturing.

  • Set up and operate precision diamond turning CNC lathes and mills to manufacture small precision parts and assemblies.

  • Program CNC mills and lathes, and with CAD and CAM Inventor.

  • Perform machining calculations to determine optimum dimensions, speeds, and feeds.

  • Use Solid works or similar 3D models.

  • Work in a fast-paced environment to meet production deadlines.

  • Handle valuable and extremely fragile components daily.

  • Design and machine fixtures to be used for holding and manipulating parts during manufacturing.

  • Recognize, report, and assist with diagnosing machining and operational problems or issues in equipment and testing situations.

  • Work in a safe manner in accordance with established operating procedures and practices.

  • Maintain thorough and accurate process data recording.

  • Write procedures and train others in executing them.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Associate’s degree, degree from a vocational school, or BS degree. Equivalent experience may be substituted in lieu of education (6 additional years in lie of a Bachelor’s Degree)

  • Knowledge of precision machining tools and techniques

  • Strong ability to learn and operate computer software.

  • Ability to learn use of metrology instrumentation and microscopes, ability to interpret engineering drawings and identify and apply fabrication procedures .

  • Excellent attention to detail with the ability to identify and correct erroneous process steps that result in specifications not being met. Suggest process changes to achieve specifications.

  • Good communication skills.

  • Ability to work independently to meet deadlines and prioritize multiple assignments.

  • U.S. Citizenship required.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Minimum three years’ experience in a job with similar responsibilities and qualifications

  • Experience handling very small and delicate components.

  • Experience with use of metrology instrumentation and microscopes

  • Experience with operating process-control and data management computer software

  • Ability to convey ideas efficiently and effectively.

  • Strong problem-solving and organizational skills

Physical Requirements

  • Must be able to remain in a stationary position 50%.

  • Needs to occasionally move about inside the office to access file cabinets, office machinery, etc.
