Job Overview:Assumes responsibility for obtaining all blood or non-blood specimens of patients seen in physician s office by venipuncture from the arm and/or micro collections from fingers in a variety of collection tubes or capillaries, some of which contain preservatives or anticoagulants. Prepares all specimens to be sent to appropriate laboratories and completes applicable paperwork, Assumes responsibility for recognizing situation that must be brought to the attention of the Office Manager or the Manager of Support Services of the Department of Pathology at Saint Barnabas Medical Center. Performs additional tasks as requested by the Manager of Support Service.

Qualifications:

Required:

  • High School Diploma

Preferred:

Completion of a recognized phlebotomy course in Phlebotomy and/or Medical Assistant (or equivalent).

Certification with an accredited Agency (such as: the American Society of Phlebotomy Technicians, Inc. and/or the National Phlebotomy Association (NPA).

1 year of Practical Phlebotomy Experience (Preferred).

Essential Functions:

  • Adheres to all policies regarding the safe handling of specimens; follows prescribed methods for needle and syringe control, and maintains and cleans accessioning and procurement dispatch area and equipment, such as countertops, centrifuges, refrigerators, etc.

  • Adheres to infection control practices and procedures.

  • Aheres to safety policies regarding safe handling/disposal of specimens, chemicals, biohazardous materials and sharps; maintains a clean and safe work environment and maintains patient and professional confidentiality.

  • Answers telephone in a timely manner giving factual information according to the nature of the question and within hospital guidelines.

  • Applies specimen labels at patient bedside/chairside to blood or non-blood samples, with patient s full name, identification (hospital) number, date and time of collection and all information pertaining to the specimen collection (i.e. above, below I.V.) and transports the specimens back to the department. (Ref: Proc. Manual).

  • Centrifuges/siphons off supernatant and splits specimens for multiple section and test analysis, setting up work sheets for some large volume analyzers; collects blood/non-blood specimens from nursing units and transports Pathology Department.

  • Completes mandatory education in a timely manner. Participates in on-going education (in service, continuing education, etc.).

  • Follows prescribed methods for needle/syringe control, adhering to safety/infection control procedures; reports unsafe conditions.

  • Greets patients/families (gives name, position, dept.); explains procedures, verifies patient s name, hospital number, location from wristband against collection label before beginning procedure.

  • Logs in blood/non-blood specimens into Pathology Dept. via Hospital Information System and/or Laboratory Information System, indicating accessioning time, type of specimen, patient id, quantity of sample; separates specimen labels for multiple section test analysis.

  • Maintains positive patient identification through specimen collection process

  • Obtains blood and/or non-blood computer labels from Pathology Dept.

  • Prepares all materials for specimen collection/labeling, prior to approaching patient s bedside, adhering to safety/infection control policies and procedures.

  • Prepares venipuncture site or skin puncture site; performs venipuncture or microcollection according to departmental and institution procedure and policies, obtaining clotted and/or non-clotted specimens for laboratory procedures in proper tubes and quantities.

  • Reviews on a periodic basis all policy, procedure and instrument manuals in order to ensure compliance and maintain current knowledge of procedures.

  • Stocks shelves with phlebotomy supplies, issues 24-hour urine containers with/without preservative, and maintains/cleans accessioning/procurement dispatch area/equipment (centrifuge, refrigerators).
