- Responsible for operation of crane's / material handlers used in heavy lifting and transport of scrap materials from the yard into trailers.
- Perform daily inspections of equipment and report any defects or needed repairs to supervisor.
- Responsible for inspecting slings, cables, straps, and the crane prior to lifting operations.
- Perform preventative maintenance as required to ensure safe and continual service of Material Handler / Crane.
- Supervise fueling of the crane.
- Clean equipment as needed.
- Properly follow company and OSHA safety procedures.
- Responsible for personal safety and the safety of co-workers.
- Shows commitment to The David Hirschberg Steel Co. safety culture through personal behavior and willingness to influence others.
- Responsible for own, yard spotters, and rigger's compliance with company policy, safety guidelines, and procedures that pertain to the crane operations and the crane / material handlers job.
- Remains in continual voice (radio) and or hand communication with yard spotter/rigger while operating the crane.
- Responsible for creating an environment fostering open communications concerning safety issues.
- Participates in safety meetings and other rigger, operator safety programs.
- Assures that all lifts are within load limits of equipment and correctly rigged and handled.
- Assures that lifting gear is inspected prior to use.
- Follows correct lock-out and tag procedures.
- Operates crane equipment to hoist materials and equipment in a safe and efficient manner.
- Performs tasks assigned by management and rigger during lifting procedures.
[Experience and Qualifications:]{.underline}
- Minimum one year experience as crane operator
- Knowledge of heavy equipment operating principles
- Ability to operate equipment under varying working conditions.
- Experience in an Industrial outdoor work environment.
- Ability to understand and carry-out written and oral instructions.
- Working knowledge of hazards and safety precautions common to heavy equipment operations.
- Completion of High School or secondary education is preferred
- Ability to meet attendance schedule with dependability ad consistency
- Have the ability to visually identify different scrap materials for separation and shipment
- Have a working knowledge of organized separation of scrap materials by content in the yard
- Be able to demonstrate safe loading of scrap materials into open top trailers for shipment
