What You Will Do

You will lead, mentor, and steward a diverse team as they increase their impact at the national and global scales and build on their successes ranging from fundamental science to production/operations, using scientific and technical approaches from theory/modeling to field observations, and working on applications from deep underground to extraterrestrial.

The Associate Laboratory Director for Chemical, Earth, & Life Sciences (ALDCELS) portfolio supports the full breadth of LANL missions, from large-scale national security campaigns to single-investigator discovery science. ALDCELS stewards the Laboratory's Programs in Applied Energy and Office of Science Biological and Environmental Research as well as institutional capabilities in the Science of Signatures and Complex Natural & Engineered Systems. ALDCELS has a dedicated, diverse, multi-disciplinary team of approximately 900, including a robust student and postdoc population and a budget of over $400M. The ALD leads and manages scientific, human resource, financial, operational, and outreach activities for CELS.

The ALDCELS is member of the Laboratory's leadership team, reports to the Deputy Laboratory Director for Science, Technology, & Engineering, and is directly responsible for advancing the LANL mission through simultaneous excellence in nuclear security, mission-focused ST&E, operations, and community relations. The ALD must embody the Laboratory's culture statement, "how we do our work is as important as what we do." Collaborative partnership with the full breadth of LANL's programmatic missions and capability-stewardship organizations is essential.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to leading strategic and tactical planning and execution; ensuring deliverable quality and satisfaction of principal customers; developing and implementing institutional plans and executing programs for meeting or exceeding LANL/Department of Energy contractual requirements and performance measures, including a commitment to organizational learning; effectively addressing Laboratory goals for programmatic, business, and operational excellence; maintaining effective working relationships with Laboratory management, ALDCELS managers and workforce, and internal and external customers; and an unwavering commitment to recruiting, developing, and retaining a creative multidisciplinary workforce, and building/ fostering an inclusive work environment in a technical organization.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

Leadership

Demonstrated ability to organize, inspire, fund, and lead multidisciplinary R&D teams to identify and resolve complex and ambitious technical problems of significant impact at national and global scales.

A record of successful scientific research and programmatic accomplishments in a relevant research area as evidenced by publications, citations, presentations, grants, or programmatic support, and/or leadership of large technical projects or organizations.

Demonstrated leadership of a complex technical organization delivering on a broad portfolio with fiscal and programmatic responsibilities.

Experience in effective decision-making and comfortable with identifying and taking prudent risks.

Management experience implementing, enforcing, and providing clear guidance for institutional policies and government regulations affecting R&D activities, projects, and/or initiatives including experience managing personnel, negotiating agreements, delegating authority, building consensus among staff members, attracting, evaluating, mentoring, developing, and retaining a creative multidisciplinary workforce, and building/ fostering an inclusive work environment in a technical organization.

Demonstrated experience developing and implementing plans or programs to meet or exceed contractual requirements, performance measures, regulations, and laws, including the proven ability to do so while operating within a highly sensitive or classified environment. Experience integrating and implementing tenets of multiple management systems including safety, security, and conduct of operations.

Education/Experience

Position requires an advanced degree in physical science, engineering, or a related discipline from an accredited institution and 15 years' experience related to CELS; or an equivalent combination of education and R&D experience related to chemical, earth, or life sciences. An earned Ph.D. is preferred.

Security Clearance

Ability to obtain a DOE "Q" clearance, which generally requires U.S. citizenship.

Ability to obtain a TS/SCI clearance.

Desired Qualifications:

• Familiarity with Los Alamos National Laboratory research and program activities.

• Working knowledge of, or prior experience in, the DOE/NNSA Laboratory environment.

• Experience managing technical work in a high hazard environment (e.g., nuclear, chemical, biological).

• Successful record of working with Congressional leaders, senior administration officials, and regional constituents in communicating complex institutional messages.

• Successful experience and engagement with multiple programmatic sponsors and nationally recognized R&D organizations in chemical, earth, and life sciences.

• Active Q and TS/SCI clearances.

Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.

Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.

*Eligibility requirements : To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

New-Employment Drug Test : The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.

Regular position : Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.

Incentive Compensation Program : Position is eligible to participate in the Triad Incentive Compensation Program. You must be in an eligible position for a minimum of 3 months, before July 1st and remain in an eligible position as of the end of the fiscal year, September 30th. The annual distribution is prorated based on the number of months in the eligible position.
