Los Alamos National Laboratory Mechanical Design Engineer in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

Support our National Security Mission as a Mechanical Design Engineer with Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL)! In this position with Engineering Services Division (ES-DO) you will develop, maintain, and apply a diverse set of engineering capabilities to provide innovative engineering solutions within the Laboratory. ES Groups are responsible for implementing the Conduct of Engineering (COE) program at LANL in support of systems, structure and component modifications and new installations. With this opportunity you will support nuclear, accelerator or non-nuclear facilities across 38 square miles of the Laboratory and promote a workplace culture centered on mutual respect and inclusivity, ensuring freedom from discrimination and harassment for all.

Mechanical Engineer 2 ($101,700 - $168,200)

As a Mechanical Design Engineer you will concurrently work on multiple design teams shaping LANL's facilities and infrastructure to serve the needs of a growing and changing Laboratory. Your teams will provide engineering consulting services typical of any or all project phases from programming, scoping, design, construction, commissioning, and operation. Your responsibilities will include:

  • Assess condition of existing facilities and infrastructure systems

  • Generate written recommendations, develop design scopes, and estimate design efforts

  • Interface and coordinate with project stakeholders, foster timely coordination between all design disciplines, and ensure timely engagement of third-party resources such as Sustainability and Commissioning

  • Adhere to LANL's Engineering Standards, Conduct of Engineering, prevailing codes and standards, and ensure integration of green initiatives on all projects

  • Mentor junior design personnel

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

Demonstrated knowledge, ability, and experience in:

  • Engineering principles and procedures, design guides, appropriate standards, and administrative practices

  • Facility mechanical engineering systems and calculations, applications of engineering methods, and application of computer-aided engineering tools

  • Industry, regulatory, or national codes and standards including IBC, IMC, IEBC, ASME, etc.

  • Installations including design details, equipment data sheets, equipment selection, installation instructions/specifications, post-modification testing and commissioning procedures, all to satisfy the applicable design requirements

  • Development and implementation of interdisciplinary design solutions to complex facility and equipment installations

  • Articulation of concepts through various oral and written communication media, using a diverse range of technical and business acumen

  • Self-directed work, planning, and prioritization, as well as mentorship of early career engineers

Education/Experience: Position requires a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering from an ABET-accredited college or university and a minimum of 3 years of practical work experience necessary to perform the responsibilities outlined above.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated knowledge of DOE standards applicable to mechanical design implementation

  • Familiarity with LANL engineering processes and procedures

  • Experience with AutoCAD drafting software and TRANE Trace 700 simulation software or other similar/comparable drafting/analysis software

  • Registration as an Engineer-Intern (EI) or Professional Engineer (PE)

Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Position Commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.

Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.

*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.

Regular Position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.

Internal Applicants: Regular appointment employees who have served the required period of continuous service in their current position are eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory.
