Los Alamos National Laboratory Network Engineer (Network Professional 3) in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

The Network Professional 3 will serve as a key trusted advisor and leader within the Network Operations Center (NOC) here at LANL. In this role, you'll leverage your experience to drive critical network initiatives, including firmware and hardware upgrades, troubleshooting complex network issues, and resolving outages. You will play an integral part in network design, implementation, and ongoing maintenance, ensuring the stability and performance of our infrastructure. Additionally, you'll have the opportunity to mentor and guide less experienced team members. ISD-NS is a customer-focused team dedicated to providing 24/7 support for LANL's networks. We are responsible for monitoring, managing, and maintaining all network assets across the organization. What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Demonstrated experience configuring and maintaining network devices.

  • Advanced knowledge of network protocols (such as spanning-tree, BGP, OSPF, EIGRP).

  • Experience replacing and upgrading network equipment (hardware and software).

  • Experience designing, planning, and implementing network environments.

Education/Experience : Position requires a Bachelor's Degree and 8 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. At this level, applicable advanced vendor and/or professional certification is desirable.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience using network management tools, including viewing / creating alarms, configuration management and troubleshooting syslog information.

  • Experience with Cisco & Arista switches and routers.

  • Experience with creating / modifying network diagrams (Visio, Office).

  • Experience administering and troubleshooting wireless.

  • Experience with capturing network traffic and running network traffic analysis via packet capture software.

  • Demonstrated experience deploying, configuring, and maintaining network monitoring tools and applications.

  • Cisco Certifications / Juniper Certifications

Essential Job Functions (can perform with or without reasonable accommodation): Reaching overhead, reaching horizontally, reaching down, operating a motor vehicle, the ability to lift up to 30 lbs.

Work Environment:

Work Location: The work location for this position is hybrid and is located in Los Alamos, NM. Hybrid is defined as working partially onsite/partially offsite but within 2 hours ground commute of this location. All work locations are at the discretion of management and can change at any time with appropriate notice.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.

Note to Applicants: Employee will be required to participate in an on-call rotation and work occasionally on non-standard hours (nights and weekends).

Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2 (https://directives.nnsa.doe.gov/supplemental-directive/sd-0206-0002) . Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.

*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.

Internal Applicants: Regular appointment employees who have served the required period of continuous service in their current position are eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory.
