Los Alamos National Laboratory Nuclear Materials Operations Support Specialist 3/4 in Los Alamos, New Mexico

The Operational Safety and Compliance Programs group (PSS-2) is seeking a highly motivated Operations Support Specialist to be at the forefront of managing and safeguarding nuclear materials with unparallel precision and expertise. This position will be filled at either the Operational Support Specialist 3/4 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.

Operational Support Specialist 3 $83,900 - $136,600

As an Operational Support Specialist reporting to the First Line Manager (FLM) of the Nuclear Materials Operations Support Team, you will conduct thorough analysis of nuclear material inventory utilizing data management and analytics to maintain accurate records. Develop comprehensive reports and presentations for management, program owners, and stakeholders, summarizing data trends, and forecasts. Analyze data to identify areas for improvement in nuclear materials management and propose innovative methodologies to enhance processes. The selected candidate will become well versed in DOE Order 410.2 Management of Nuclear Materials compliance along with additional governing policies, procedures and regulations.

Operational Support Specialist 4 $101,700 - $168,200

In addition to what was outlined at the lower level, at this level the selected candidate will provide expert oversight and input related to the lifecycle planning of nuclear materials. Provide expert guidance on interpreting and applying DOE regulations and Laboratory policies to our processes. Address significant and complex issues with creative solutions. Offer expert knowledge as it relates to compliant shipping/receiving of nuclear materials.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Advanced knowledge of database queries, forms and reports.

  • Expertise in conducting thorough research, evaluating alternative solutions, and recommending effective resolutions to solve problems.

  • Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills demonstrated by presentations and professional correspondence.

  • Proven expertise in data analysis, including the ability to plan, identify trends, and generate detailed reports.

  • Advanced programming's skills and querying capabilities.

  • Advanced knowledge managing sensitive or classified information.

  • Demonstrated ability to review, understand, and effectively execute complex end-to-end work processes with minimal supervision.

  • Exceptional experience collaborating with team members, other organizations, and customers to proactively address and resolve complex problems.

Additional Job Requirements for Operations Support Specialist 4:

In addition to the requirements outlined above, qualification at the higher level requires:

  • Expert knowledge in strategic planning of nuclear materials, in order to optimize management, storage, and compliance.

  • Proven expertise in conceptualizing and articulating key aspects of operations to diverse audiences, including both technical and non-technical stakeholders.

  • Expert understanding of shipping/receiving of nuclear materials.

  • Proven expert ability to address significant and complex issues by developing innovative and creative solutions that drive impactful results.

Education/Experience at lower level: Position requires a Bachelor's Degree from an accredited institution and 5 years of directly related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. At this level, post graduate course work may be desirable.

Education/Experience at higher level: Position requires a Bachelor's Degree from an accredited institution and 8 years of directly related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. At this level, post graduate course work may be expected.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated knowledge of nuclear materials management (e.g., material storage, control, shipping, or disposition) in accordance with DOE Order 410.2 Management of Nuclear Materials.

  • Experience in programming relational and/or SQL Server databases.

  • Experience performing transactions within the LAPS-A accountability system and LANMAS.

  • Proven knowledge of TA-55 PF-4 operations.

Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.

Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2 (https://directives.nnsa.doe.gov/supplemental-directive/sd-0206-0002) . Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.

Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.

*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.

Internal Applicants: Regular appointment employees who have served the required period of continuous service in their current position are eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory.
