Job Information
Los Alamos National Laboratory Postdoctoral Research Associate/ MPA-MAGLAB in Los Alamos, New Mexico
What You Will Do
Work at the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory's Pulsed Field Facility group (MPA-MAGLAB) to conduct research in superconductor's thermodynamic and vortex pinning properties. Using the latest pulsed-current techniques and other advanced pulsed-field methods, you will focus on the study of vortex pinning and dynamics. Beyond the fundamental interest in such phenomena, there is a high interest in studying superconducting materials for fusion applications that will perform at low temperatures and high fields as well as novel superconducting systems where linear and non-linear transport can bring great insights. This will include in-situ measurements of properties as a function of irradiation dose and rate in different superconductors.
The NHMFL-PFF is a user facility where you will have the opportunity to collaborate with users from around the world with the latest and most advanced superconducting materials available. You will work alongside an interdisciplinary group of experimental and theoretical physicists and material scientists to conduct research on vortex pinning and irradiation damage.
What You Need
A background in experimental condensed-matter physics, specifically cryogenics and electrical transport. Experience with physical properties measurements such as electric transport (linear, non-linear). Having experience in pulsed techniques is a big advantage, i.e., either pulsed fields or pulsed measurements like I-Vs. Experience in other measurement techniques is desired, but not strictly required, e.g., magnetization.
Minimum Job Requirements:
Excellent written and communication skills in English and the ability to work independently, creatively, and in a team. Experience with condensed-matter experimental physics.
Education: A Ph.D. in Physics or Material Science or equivalent within the past five years or soon to be completed is required. The candidate must be within 5 years of completion of Ph.D. at time of being proposed for review by the committee and will have completed all Ph.D. requirements by commencement of appointment.
Work Location:
The work location for this position is onsite (in person) and located in Los Alamos, NM.
Salary: Competitive salaries are based on the date the PhD degree requirements were completed or the degree was awarded. Starting salary for a new graduate is currently $94,500. For more information go to Postdoc Program website at https://www.lanl.gov/careers/career-options/postdoctoral-research/index.php .
Notes to Applicants:
For full consideration, applicants should submit a comprehensive resume, a cover letter describing their qualifications with respect to all required and desired skills and three references.
If invited for an interview, candidates will be asked to make an oral presentation at Los Alamos National Laboratory.
Potential candidates should submit a resume and three letters of reference to maiorov@lanl.gov. Details about the LANL post-doc program can be found at: http://lanl.gov/science/postdocs/
