Los Alamos National Laboratory Senior Mechanical Designer and Drafter (Designer/Drafter 4/5) in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

Join our Team! Working in the Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) Mechanical and Thermal Engineering (E-1) Group, you will be expected to use your extensive knowledge of mechanical design to solve problems for an interesting, diverse and complex array of projects. You will collaborate with engineers and other technical staff members to ensure product design meets requirements and design standards.

The Mechanical and Thermal (E-1) group partners with programs and innovators to deliver applied mechanical and thermal engineering solutions for LANL's core national security missions and a variety of complementary programs. Our mechanical engineers, technologists, technicians and designers have a passion for solving challenging technical problems.

This position will be filled at either the Designer/Drafter 4 or Designer/Drafter 5 level, depending on the credentials of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.

Mechanical Designer/Drafter 4 ($69,500- $110,300)

You will use your knowledge working with Computer Aided Drafting (CAD) software and application of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) to capture complex mechanical engineering designs. You will apply engineering design principles to design and guide the fabrication of complex and non-standard components and assemblies. You will generate complete design packages for complex mechanical assemblies and systems and collaborate with technical staff members to resolve any design issues. You will define the modeling structure for large, complex design projects.

Senior Mechanical Designer/Drafter 5 ($83,900 - $136,600)

As a Senior Mechanical Designer/Drafter, you will be expected to lead small project teams in all elements of product designs. This may require you to perform complex calculations that support engineering design. You will also need excellent communication skills and the ability to interact with all levels of personnel, customers and management.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

Computer Aided Design (CAD)

Demonstrated ability to expertly use SolidWorks and/or Creo CAD software packages to generate models, assemblies and drawings for complex mechanical designs. Demonstrated knowledge of applying Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) principles to designs.

Mechanical Design

Demonstrated ability to assemble complete design packages for complex mechanical assemblies and systems. Knowledge and application of design standards.

Communication

Experience interacting with all levels of personnel and customers in a collaborative work environment that promotes diversity and is respectful of different technical backgrounds. Demonstrated ability to express ideas clearly in a variety of communication mediums including oral and written presentations and reports.

Self-Leadership

Demonstrated ability to work independently, under minimal supervision while organizing, prioritizing and following through on multiple tasks to completion under strict deadlines and changing priorities.

Additional Job Requirements for Senior Mechanical Designer\Drafter (Designer\Drafter 5):

Leadership

Demonstrated ability to lead small project teams, providing technical leadership and oversight in planning and execution.

Advanced Design Solutions

Demonstrated ability to perform calculations in support of unique mechanical design solutions

Education/Experience for Designer/Drafter 4: Position requires an Associate's Degree in an Engineering or Technical field and 5 years of related experience, or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Education/Experience for Designer/Drafter 5: Position requires an Associate's Degree in an Engineering or Technical field and 7 years of related experience, or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Desired Qualifications:

  • SolidWorks Simulation, Creo Simulate or other engineering analysis software experience

  • Product data management (PDM) user/administrator experience

  • GD&T certification

  • Experience designing for additive manufacturing

  • Active Q clearance, which normally requires US citizenship

Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.

Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2 (https://directives.nnsa.doe.gov/supplemental-directive/sd-0206-0002) . Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.

Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.

*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.
