Position Description:

Performs manual work in the operation of heavy, medium, and light mobile equipment, and the maintenance of all such equipment used in the Grounds Maintenance Department. May act as crew leader in the absence of next level supervision.

Major/Essential Functions:

  • Maintain all aspects of grounds including turf, irrigation systems, fences, trees, shrubs, ground covers, walkways, and hardscapes.

  • Observe entire grounds and identify and document all problems and/or hazards.

  • Start engines, move throttles, switches, or levers, or depress pedals to operate machines, such as bulldozers, trench excavators, road graders, or backhoes.

  • Utilize proper safety equipment and techniques to prevent personal injury and property damage and complies with the grounds maintenance safety program to include all safety and health rules, regulations and operating policies and procedures.

  • Drive, maneuver and service equipment equipped with blades in successive passes over working areas to remove topsoil, vegetation, or rocks to distribute and level earth or terrain.

  • Load and move dirt, rocks, equipment, or other materials, using trucks, crawler tractors, power cranes, shovels, graders, or related equipment.

Required Qualifications:

10th grade education or equivalent plus three years related experience including some in the campus Grounds Maintenance Dept. Commercial drivers license or willingness to obtain such a license. Additional job related experience may substitute on a year-by-year basis for required education as long as applicant possesses desired written skills.
