Position Description:

Manages a unit within a department. Plans, organizes and develops goals and procedures for the unit. Represent the unit to administrators, outside agencies and others on relevant matters. Supervises subordinate staff.

Major/Essential Functions:

  • Creating physical inventories of the archives’ photographic and related media, including identification of items in need of conservation and rehousing.

  • Arranging and describing photographic collections in accordance with Describing Archives: A Content Standard (DACS).

  • Creating finding aids for both newly processed and existing photographic collections using Encoded Archival Description.

  • Assisting with the description of digitized and born digital photographic items and collections and creating controlled subject vocabulary documentation.

  • Assisting Southwest Collection Archivist and Registrar with updating photograph archiving procedures and workflows.

  • Conducting oral histories related to photographic collections.

  • Assisting with collection acquisition activities, requiring travel throughout the Southwest.

  • Assisting with reference requests as needed.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of best practices for handling, organizing, describing, and preserving physical and digital photographic materials.

  • Ability to identify conservation requirements of photographic materials and collaborate on their conservation and preservation.

  • Competency in computer applications, including Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, and Oxygen XML Editor.

  • Evidence of ability to attend to accuracy, attention to detail, and the necessity for confidentiality.

  • Proven ability to manage multiple priorities and projects simultaneously.

  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively with a team, sometimes across organizational boundaries.

  • Exceptional organizational, analytical, and decision-making skills.

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 1 year of hands-on experience working in an archival setting with a focus on the arrangement, description, and preservation of archival materials, preferably photographic materials.

  • Familiarity with DACS, EAD, Dublin Core, and other metadata standards, as well as the use of Library of Congress Authorities and FAST for subject heading identification.

  • Familiarity with digital imaging software.
