Position Description:

Manages a unit within a department. Plans, organizes and develops goals and procedures for the unit. Represent the unit to administrators, outside agencies and others on relevant matters. Supervises subordinate staff.

Major/Essential Functions:

  • Oversees maintenance and repair of facilities, property, and equipment.

  • Responsible for the daily care of livestock, monitoring herd health, and record keeping.

  • Responsible for the standard of care for livestock and working with internal and external regulatory entities to maintain regulatory compliance.

  • Responsible for the fiscal management and sustainability of the unit; budgeting, purchases, and revenue generation.

  • Personnel management; supervise student workers, volunteers, and visitors.

  • Coordinate animal use for classes, facilitating sheep/goat focused labs for various courses.

  • Coordinate research and teaching space needs, managing animal production and marketing, monitoring herd health.

  • Collaborates with departmental faculty and administration regarding plans and priorities for facility usage, deferred maintenance, capital improvement, and/or replacement.

  • May perform other duties or assignments as needed.

Preferred Qualifications:

M.S. in Animal Science or related field. Experience with sheep/goat production. Experience managing employees in sheep/goat production. Experience with sheep/goat production used for teaching and research. Experience with purchasing, accounting, and budget management.

About the Department and/or College:

The Department of Animal and Food Sciences at Texas Tech University is seeking applications for a Sheep and Goat Unit Manager. This position requires student interaction and is responsible for maintaining a high standard of management, animal care, and worker safety. The candidate will be responsible for leading and managing the daily operations of the Sheep and Goat Unit at the Agriculture Field Lab in New Deal, TX. In addition, the candidate will be expected to assist with sheep and goat focused courses or course activities that utilize the facility and/or its livestock. Good communication skills and positive, supportive interactions with faculty, staff, students, and other stakeholders are essential. This position is vital to ensuring the success of daily operations, as well as fulfillment of Texas Tech University teaching, research, outreach, and engagement missions.
