POSITION SUMMARY

To provide tutoring and academic support to students and maintain adequate and accurate tutoring records under the direction of the Tutoring Coordinator.

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES, FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Tutor for mathematics courses (primarily statistics and/or college algebra), Writing, Computer Applications, Biology (A & P),  using appropriate instructional and learning methods in accordance with the course objectives and program requirements to help students learn and understand key concepts and material taught in class.
  2. Assist students with academic tasks and assignments such as homework, papers, projects, research, and test preparation. Teach study skills, note-taking skills, and test-taking strategies as they pertain to the course in which the student is being tutored.
  3. Promote a welcoming, supportive, and inclusive tutoring environment. Provide constructive and positive feedback in order to encourage, motivate, and build confidence in tutees. Adjust tutoring approach to meet students' level of understanding and preferred learning styles. 
  4. Prepare for tutoring sessions by reviewing previous tutoring session logs and course materials.  Request and secure relevant materials and resources, as needed.
  5. Enter tutoring session notes in a timely manner and maintain accurate records using tutor tracking software. Maintain user proficiency for software programs, systems, and databases used by the College.
  6. Attend any training sessions or meetings prior to initial employment or during each academic term as required.
  7. Perform other duties as assigned between tutoring sessions, including but not limited to developing instructional and academic support aids, maintaining tutoring center bulletin boards, assisting with marketing and outreach, etc.
  8. Respond to inquiries from students, College employees and customers while maintaining standards of confidentiality and privacy, in a timely manner. Maintain confidentiality in accordance with the College, FERPA, student records, and any other protected documentation.

QUALIFICATIONS

Associate's degree from a regionally accredited college or university required.  Bachelor's degree or higher preferred.  Ability to work with individuals from diverse backgrounds in 1-1 and group settings required.  Previous teaching or tutoring experience highly desired.  Demonstrated knowledge and competence in statistics, college algebra, or related courses; tutors must have earned an "A" in the courses they are tutoring, or a "B" with a related instructor or supervisor recommendation.  College transcripts will be required upon hire.

Exhibit excellent English, writing skills, and interpersonal communication skills. Ability to confidentially maintain detailed records in accordance with FERPA.  Strong time management and organizational skills required.
