As the Senior Controls Engineer at WSA-USA, you will be responsible for being the primary PLC control system/library owner for all assigned projects. You will be a mentor to other Controls Engineers. You will be part of a group of highly committed professionals who provide expertise and ensure the success of automation projects.

Specific responsibilities include:

  • Continuous process optimization of automated lines we install for our customers. Become owner / subject matter expert to drive equipment-related process improvement including detailed troubleshooting and root cause analysis on equipment we install for our customers.
  • Conceptualize, design, engineer, and execute industry leading projects from start to finish.
  • Interface with industry leading customers.
  • Design, engineer and enhance the current PLC controls library.
  • Work with the software team to integrate cutting edge conveyor tracking software to accurately track products from the beginning of the facility to shipping.
  • Attend project related turnover meetings, functional design reviews and project team meetings.
  • Understand scope, budgets, and schedules for the project.
  • Assist the field service department with troubleshooting of legacy projects, when needed.
  • Participate in PLC Code reviews.
  • Provide site/field reports daily, including progress, issues, and next steps, to keep the project on schedule.
  • Develop and test newly developed PLC logic using a state-of-the-art simulation environment to decrease onsite testing required.
  • Test newly developed PLC logic at customer facilities and make any required changes found during simulation testing.

The best candidate for the position has a high aptitude to learn new skillsets in the position. The expectation is this Engineer will start with strengths in a given field (AUTOCAD, robotics, PLC Programming, Om, Python, HMI scripting, etc.) and then learn all other areas. This role requires capability across the board to sustain all parts of the automated equipment. 

Other requirements include:

Bachelor of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering or Electronic Engineering Technology, Mechanical or Computer related Engineering, or equivalent in education

Experience with PLCs such as Siemens, Allen-Bradley, Omron CX programmer experience and others

UL, NEC, and NFPA 70E knowledge, CSA is preferred but not required

AutoCAD experience required

Allen Bradley Studio 5000 required

Allen Bradley RS 500 required

Safety control system experience

Willingness to travel 20-30%, work nights and/or weekends

An understanding on how networks are designed and implemented (Class types, subnet design and implementation, and IP assigning and documentation)

Designing HMI operator screen layouts to interface with development of PLC logic

Clean sheet PLC logic design and implementation using electrical schematics and machine layouts using internal state machine programming style

Understanding of controls engineering standards and best practices

Capability to complete demanding assignments by applying advanced controls engineering methods and tools

Ability to influence cross-functional teams to deliver optima
