Job Description:

The Payroll Accountant will manage and oversee the organization's payroll functions, ensuring timely, accurate processing and compliance with government regulations. This role requires high confidentiality, excellent analytical skills, and the ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment.Military Veterans Encouraged to Apply.

Requirements:

  • This position is hybrid and will require working on site in McLean, VA at least twice a week
Education and Experience:
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting or related field required.
  • Minimum of 3-5 years of experience in payroll accounting or related field.
  • Extensive knowledge of payroll functions, including preparation, balancing, internal control, and payroll taxes.
  • Proficient with payroll software (e.g., ADP, Paychex) and MS Office Suite, especially Excel.
  • Strong knowledge of federal, state, and local payroll laws and regulations.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • High level of integrity and ability to handle confidential information.
Responsibilities:

Payroll Processing:

  • Implement, maintain, and review payroll processing and accounting systems.
  • Ensure accurate and timely processing of payroll transactions, including salaries, benefits, garnishments, taxes, and other deductions. Manage payroll updates, including new hires, terminations, and pay rate changes. Prepare and process semi-monthly payroll for all employees.

Compliance:

  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local payroll, wage, and hour laws.
  • Prepare and file payroll tax returns, ensuring timely payment of payroll taxes.
  • Stay updated on changes in payroll laws and regulations.

Data Management:

  • Maintain accurate records and reports of payroll transactions.
  • Update employee payroll records, including changes in salaries, tax status, and other deductions.
  • Handle employee inquiries regarding payroll issues and resolve discrepancies.

Accounting and Reporting:

  • Prepare payroll-related journal entries and reconcile payroll accounts.
  • Assist with month-end and year-end closing processes.
  • Prepare and distribute annual W-2 forms.

Systems Management:

  • Utilize payroll software to process payroll and generate reports.
  • Collaborate with HR and IT departments to ensure efficient use of payroll systems.
  • Identify and recommend updates to payroll accounting software, systems, and procedures.

Audits and Reviews:

  • Facilitate internal and external audits by providing records and documentation, including 401(k) reporting.
  • Conduct regular reviews and audits of payroll procedures to ensure accuracy and compliance.

Other Duties:

  • Perform other duties as assigned.
