Position Overview:

SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory is seeking a Mechanical Designer to develop and execute complex mechanical design, assembly and tooling to develop or improve products and facilitate manufacturing operations. Performs mechanical design tasks requiring fully developed skills and understanding of area of specialization.

Given the nature of this position, SLAC will require onsite work.

Your Specific Responsibilities Include:

  • Designs components or a portion of systems and modifies existing designs to develop and/or improve manufacturing operations.

  • Utilizes Solid Edge 3D computer-aided design tools create and maintain complex assembly drawings and models.

  • Applies in-depth knowledge of the principles and practices of mechanical design to create intricate mechanical designs from written and verbal input.

  • Performs in-depth analysis of studies, computes basic calculations, and prepares original rough layouts, sketches to present design proposal.

  • Inspects design for accuracy and adherence to engineering criteria/specifications, manufacturing, tooling, material, planning and to appropriate production standards and determines ease of manufacturing, availability of materials, and specifications.

  • Creates design layouts, tolerance studies, weldments, for basic engineering calculations, assembly and detail drawings.

  • Coordinates workflow between design development and engineers and/or project managers and shops to evaluate manufacturability and accuracy of process.

  • Supports design strategy, execution and coordinates, and maintains drawing schedules; attends and contributes to design review meetings.

  • May collaborate with key contacts outside own area of expertise.

  • May serve as project leader or provide guidance to less experienced mechanical designers.

**Note:** This is a 12-month fixed term position with the possibility of extension or converting to regular, continuing status. **To be successful in this position you will bring:**

  • Associate degree in Drafting Technology or related engineering disciplines and 3 years of relevant experience or 5 years of related equivalent experience or combination of education and experience in complex mechanical designs.

  • Ability to perform complex mechanical designs, modeling, and routine engineering, planning duties and the ability to estimate drafting time accurately.

  • Demonstrated understanding of the principles and concepts of Mechanical Engineering.

  • Must have High Vacuum component design experience. Familiar with Vacuum pumps, valves and command sealing joints.

  • Experience designing mechanically driven devices which use hydraulics, and/or stepper motors.

  • Demonstrated sound understanding of manufacturing capabilities and be able to demonstrate the ability to design for manufacturability.

  • Extensive experience and in-depth knowledge of tolerances, clearances, and fit of parts.

  • Good understanding of Geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T)

  • Ability to translate established design concepts into finished pieces.

  • Ability to perform detailed work with high level of accuracy and attention to detail.

  • Ability to work with minimal supervision, follow department standards and processes.

  • Ability to work with others effectively as part of a team.

  • Strong organizational and communication (both written and verbal) skills.

  • Demonstrated understanding of job-required software applications and tools.

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office applications (Excel, Word, PowerPoint) or similar software.

**Preferred Qualifications:**

  • 3D Solid Edge modelling experience is a plus.

The expected pay range for this position is $110,000 to $129,000 per annum. SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory/Stanford University provides pay ranges representing its good faith estimate of what the university reasonably expects to pay for a position. The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal equity, geographic location and external market pay for comparable jobs.
