Position Overview:

The Motion Controls group at SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory has an immediate opening for a Motion Controls Engineering Associate to help us execute a wide range of exciting projects. The successful candidate will help document, deploy, commission, and support robust, production level electronics hardware that forms a critical part of the world’s most powerful X-ray laser.

Given the nature of this position, SLAC will require onsite work.

Your specific responsibilities include:

  • Support the lead engineer in the technical design, fabrication, installation, and testing of motion control systems.

  • Troubleshoot technical issues

  • Help develop and support various accelerator motion control subsystems implemented with a broad variety of controllers and software.

  • Generate electrical drawings

  • Maintain documentation and records for procedures, materials, and tools necessary for installation tasks.

  • Coordinate the purchase of tools and equipment necessary to complete the installation tasks.

Required Qualifications:

  • Associate degree in Electrical Engineering or related field and three years of relevant experience; or a combination of education and relevant experience.

  • Experience with electrical drawings/drafting using AutoCad or similar design software.

  • Experience making cable: soldering, crimping, and verifying pinouts using a breakout board and DVM.

  • The ability to specify, research, and order necessary components.

  • Basic Electronics Knowledge. Understanding of DC series/parallel circuits, relay operation, power supply specifications, diodes, capacitors, inductors, resistors, etc. Ability to calculate impedance, load, etc. Ability to troubleshoot basic electronic systems.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or related field.

  • Ability to follow complex motion control checkout procedure and record results. With mentorship of lead engineer and independently.

  • Mechanical Fabrication Skills. Ability to fabricate, assemble, and modify chassis, patch panels, brackets, and other components. Use of hand drill, punches, files, etc.

  • Previous experience with motion control or PLC systems.

Note: This is a 24-month fixed term position with the opportunity for extension and/or conversion to a regular continuing position, contingent on performance and project funding.

The expected pay range for this position is $90,000 to $113,000 per annum. SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory/Stanford University provides pay ranges representing its good faith estimate of what the university reasonably expects to pay for a position. The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal equity, geographic location and external market pay for comparable jobs.
