Position Overview:

Stanford Synchrotron Radiation Lightsource (SSRL), a SLAC Directorate at Stanford University, is a national scientific user facility providing synchrotron radiation for research in biology, chemistry, engineering, environmental science, material science, medicine, and physics. SSRL operates and maintains the 3GeV electron storage ring SPEAR3, the associated injector facility, and synchrotron radiation beam lines on SPEAR3.

SSRL is seeking an outstanding Engineering Associate who will be part of a dynamic scientific research environment. In this position, you will primarily provide technical support for activities within the Hard X-ray Group in the Materials Sciences Division.

The specific responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to:

  • Conceptualize and develop the mechanical, electrical and control components involved with sample manipulation and experimental environments based on requirements provided by engineers and scientists.

  • Manage the process from conception through design, procurement, assembly and commissioning.

  • Maintain, modify, repair and optimize the performance of existing equipment and experimental systems.

  • Collaborate with scientists and engineers to oversee complex non-routine analyses, select optimum solutions and perform corrective modifications to equipment and system designs.

  • Carry out all activities, including troubleshooting and resolving routine problems for scientists or engineers, independently.

  • Develop training manuals and train new instrumentation users, researchers and/or technical staff.

  • Other duties may also be assigned.

To be successful in this position you will bring:

  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering or industrial design, or 5 years of equivalent work experience after high-school diploma or combination of education and relevant experience.

  • Extensive experience using parametric CAD software (Solid Edge a plus).

  • Demonstrate the ability to conceptualize designs and have strong analytical and problem-solving skills combined with creative and innovative thinking.

  • Good working knowledge of mechanical fabrication techniques, precision mechanism design and kinematic design principles related to mechanical system design.

  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and written, especially in interfacing with physicists, scientists, engineers and technicians.

  • Demonstrated knowledge and skills of advanced scientific or engineering principles and practices.

  • Ability to independently oversee and manage system installation.

  • Ability to collaborate with senior engineering and scientific staff to design and develop special purpose equipment and/or systems.

In addition, preferred requirements include experience in the following areas:

  • Strong hands-on skill in assembling complex mechanical systems and handling delicate instruments.

  • Extensive and relevant experience with scientific instrumentation or industrial control systems is desired.

The expected pay range for this position is $109,000 - $129,000 per annum. SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory/Stanford University provides pay ranges representing its good faith estimate of what the university reasonably expects to pay for a position. The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal equity, geographic location, and external market pay for comparable jobs.
