Position Overview:

SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory seeks a Technical Planning Department (TPD) Manager. This is an exciting opportunity to support the Accelerator Directorate in efficient and reliable operation of SLAC’s accelerators, via managing planning for fabrication, assembly, installation, and other manufacturing tasks. TPD services typically include resource and cost estimating; drawing review; cost and schedule tracking; and part ordering and inventory management. Customers are primarily SLAC scientists and engineers, as TPD serves as the interface between these customers and external or SLAC fabrication services.

The role of TPD Manager includes both administrative and technical responsibilities. As the manager of the Technical Planning team, you will supervise departmental staff, set department goals and priorities, manage staff and resources, and ensure TPD fully supports Accelerator Directorate initiatives. The TPD Manager provides leadership and management for a staff of 10 to 18, comprised of bargaining unit and non-bargaining unit employees. The TPD Department Head reports to the Mechanical Engineering and Technical Support (METS) Division Director in the Accelerator Directorate of SLAC.

Given the nature of this position, this position could be fully onsite, hybrid, or fully remote.

Your specific responsibilities include:

  • Supervise, coordinate, and provide leadership to TPD in providing end-to-end planning and implementation of manufacturing and production processes within SLAC and assisting SLAC engineers/scientists and procurement with external suppliers.

  • Define the long- and short-term goals for the department based on the directorate’s business plan. Contribute to the development of the division’s strategic plan.

  • Plan, develop, and establish departmental policies and practices related to all the activities of the organization and in alignment with all SLACs internal policies including work planning, safety, and management and operation improvement initiatives.

  • Work closely with Engineering, Purchasing, Suppliers, and other functions to ensure that all material arrives according to plan.

  • Perform budget planning and assume financial and schedule accountability.

  • Perform manpower planning, ensure personnel receive appropriate training, and support employee professional development.

  • Establishes ES&H goals and objectives for the organization to ensure that SLAC is protecting the health and safety of those working at SLAC, the public and the environment as it carries out its mission.

To be successful in this position you will bring:

  • Associate Degree or other 2 year technical degree in related discipline and 7 years of experience in manufacturing and mechanical fabrication, or a combination of education, training and extensive experience in manufacturing and mechanical fabrication.

  • Demonstrated experience supervising or providing leadership to departments or teams.

  • Must have demonstrated administrative and management experience especially related to safety, manufacturing and customer service, and work planning and control.

  • Must have demonstrated knowledge and experience with mechanical fabrication, machining tools, and manufacturing processes (for example, welding, machining, sheet metal, metal finishing and ultrahigh vacuum processing), and system assembly.

  • Must be able to read and interpret technical drawings and specifications into manufacturing sequences and processes.

  • Must have a working knowledge of ultrahigh vacuum (UHV) requirements for materials and manufacturing processes.

  • Must have a strong combination of planning/scheduling and project management skills, including resource/budget planning, risk management, critical path analyses.

  • Must have demonstrated knowledge in field repair, service and maintenance of complex systems or equipment.

  • Must have demonstrated knowledge and experience with manufacturing resource planning (MRP) or enterprise resource planning (ERP) business systems

In addition, preferred requirements include:

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering or related fields.

  • 3+ years of supervisory experience.

The expected pay range for this position is $112,000 to $177,000 per annum. SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory/Stanford University provides pay ranges representing its good faith estimate of what the university reasonably expects to pay for a position. The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal equity, geographic location and external market pay for comparable jobs.
