Dept Engineering Overview:

Create test solutions for Tomorrow’s Tools. At Milwaukee Tool, Disruptive Innovation is not exclusive to the products introduced to the market; Disruptive Innovation is extended to all facets of the company including engineering support roles. As a team of Automation Engineers, we develop innovative automated test systems to support new product testing across North America. We work cross-functionally with new product development engineers and the test lab to define test system requirements. The team makes empowered decisions to rapidly transition test system design from concept to reality. Additionally, we support troubleshooting and design revisions to continuously improve existing systems.

We are looking for an Automation Engineering Manager passionate about automation, team collaboration, and product testing. A typical Automation Engineering Manager is responsible for providing technical and professional guidance to an engineering team while maintaining a psychologically safe workplace that embodies the Milwaukee Tool culture values. Guidance includes but is not limited to risk management, trade-off navigation, career development, standardization, and feasibility. Automation Engineering Manager is accountable for schedule, stakeholder communication, employee satisfaction, design performance. This position reports directly to the Sr Manager of the dept.

You will be DISRUPTIVE through these duties and responsibilities:

  • Manage a team of Automation Engineers

  • Provide technical and professional guidance cross-functionally

  • Assess project risks and support team in formulating mitigation plans

  • Continuously assess organizational capacity and address technical deficits.

  • Facilitate and drive continuous improvement projects

  • Seek opportunities to streamline processes and improve stakeholder engagement

  • Support the creation of Capital Appropriation Requests for dept and stakeholders

  • Facilitate engineering design work in times of low team bandwidth.

  • Review timelines for feasibility and agility

  • Review and approve designs, programs, and/or schematics

  • Provide clear, concise communication to stakeholders and upper management regarding the project’s status, risk, and technical details.

  • Analyze project risks and provide assessment to senior leadership – included but not limited to: Cost, Schedule, Procurement, Design, and Safety.

  • Tracks project schedule to ensure adherence to timelines.

  • Consistently visualizes entire scope of a project with very little guidance.

  • Support scope discussions surrounding test system requirements in collaboration with New Product Development, Test Lab, and Reliability Engineers

  • Accountable for the completion of assigned engineering projects within budgetary and scheduling guidelines.

  • Identify areas of continuous improvement across global labs and automation tech.

What TOOLS you’ll bring with you:

  • Bachelor of Science Degree.

  • Minimum 5 years in related field with 2 years of people management experience.

  • Understanding of problem-solving methodologies – I.e. “5 Whys”, Root Cause Analysis, Trade-Off Navigation, 8D, Fish-Bones, etc.

  • Experience in troubleshooting mechanical, electrical, and/or control systems

  • Passion for seeking to understand via questions

  • Fundamental understanding of mechatronic systems and sensor technology

  • Fundamental understanding of Measurement Uncertainty and how to use it the design stage.

  • Proficient in at least 2 of the following categories

  • Mechanical design and tolerancing

  • Electrical control panel design and standards

  • LabVIEW programming and architecture

  • PLC programming and architecture

  • Sensor application and technology

  • Test and Measurement practices

  • Direct experience with understanding and implementing industrial standards such as NFPA 70E

  • Demonstrated ability to build and maintain a cohesive and collaborative team while maintaining productivity.

  • Professional, clear communication skills.

  • Must have a working design knowledge of a wide variety of the technologies associated with Milwaukee products.

  • Understanding of data structures, processes, and metrics in lab operations.

  • Must be legally authorized to work in the US without company sponsorship

  • Experience in International Travel
