Interventional Radiology

Full Time

The Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) d elivers medical care to a wide variety of patients. The APRN is also e xamines and treats patients independently and in autonomous collaboration with other health care professionals. Ensures proper illness and injury care and disease prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and recovery. May prescribe medications and order diagnostic tests. Advises patients about continuing care.

JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Primarily performs duties across multiple UHealth facilities as needed including but not limited to UHealth Tower, Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center, Interventional Radiology Clinic, Lennar Foundation Medical Center , UHealth Doral , and with possible rotations at other locations as services are expanded .

  • Performs minimally invasive vascular and nonvascular procedures as mentioned in management protocol and collaborative agreement independently or under the general supervision of attending interventional radiologist and per hospital competencies including but not limited to:

  • Assist with Port Placements

  • Paracentesis

  • T horacentesis

  • Central venous catheter insertion and removal

  • PICC Line insertion and removal

  • Tunneled catheter placement, exchange, and removal

  • Tube removal for biliary, nephrostomy, gas trostomy, or abscess

  • Suture of simple and complex incisions and lacerations not requiring ligament or tendon repair

  • Assist physician with any additional interventional studies

  • Preceptor: Demonstrates ability to serve as a preceptor when assigned, including introducing new Nurse Practitioners to the service area, communicating and reinforcing core and job-specific expectations, validating initial competency, assessing learning needs, serving as a resource and providing feedback

  • Service educator: Serves as an education resource for staff

  • Pre-study assessment & post-study follow-up for interventional patients

  • Pre-assessment and assessment of interventional radiology patients undergoing imaging studies with IV contrast as required.

  • Patient Management of vascular and non-vascular illnesses

  • Assists attending interventional radiologists with vascular interventional procedures

  • Positively impacts Interventional Radiology patients’ clinical management and provides ongoing continuity of care

  • Assists in the coordination of patient imaging studies and laboratory tests required for specific Interventional radiology tests and procedures through contact with the referring physicians and/or the patients directly

  • Assists in the management of & the education of patients referred to the Interventional Radiology service in addition to counseling of patients and their families

  • Assists collaborating physicians during procedures

  • Recognizes the need for and obtains physician’s input and guidance as indicated within the limits of the scope of practice

  • Aids in ensuring clearance for interventional procedures based on physical and lab assessment of patients

  • Facilitates/initiates inter/intra-departmental problem-solving and communication

  • Assesses potential problems/contraindications for interventional radiology patients receiving IV contrast or those with uncontrolled medical problems, and takes appropriate actions to reduce the risk of patient injury

  • Co-manages with physicians those patients who are/become high-risk

  • Demonstrates the ability to extract pertinent patient clinical data in relation to the requested procedure

  • Monitors/communicates problems that may contribute to increased unnecessary length of hospital stay to appropriate clinicians

  • Conducts a pre-study-focused screening

  • Conducts a pre-anesthesia, pre-procedural, and focused physical screening

  • Relays information to patients regarding preparation for laboratory tests, examinations, and procedures

  • Obtains an accurate abbreviated age-specific, advanced health history review of systems including biophysical and psychosocial data

  • Performs intake of patients, including the taking of a brief medical history & performing physical exam

  • Documen ts all consultations to include focused medical history, physical exam, and summary of consultations, treatment options reviewed, risk and benefits of procedures offered, patient disposition, and the results of all testing under the indirect supervision of the attending interventional radiologist

  • Dictates all procedures that are performed independently with final approval by attending interventional radiologist

  • Triages interventional radiology patients via telephone and determines the need for emergency consultations based on acquired information and diagnostic testing necessary. Evaluate interventional radiology patients as needed for pre-screening issues related to contrast media allergies, contrast media pre-medication for allergies, and patients on hemodialysis or peritoneal dialysis

  • Participates in the development of individualized plans of care and ongoing follow-up.

  • Documents progress notes in the medical record

  • Provide verbal and written orders for medications as per collaborative protocol

  • Updates physicians as necessary regarding patient issues to ensure continuity of care

  • Defines the discharge plan of care including follow-up, medications, home care referral, etc

  • Helps to coordinate interventional procedures schedule to include requests from both the inpatient unit and outpatient referrals

  • Adheres to radiation safety regulations

  • Assures that pre- and post- procedure orders are carried out to include both pre-op and post-procedure instructions to patients, relatives , and staff

  • Assists with the transferring of patients to other institutions when necessary

  • Demonstrates knowledge and skills in interventional radiology procedures, contrast administration, response to contrast reactions , and extravasations related to interventional radiology procedures

  • Provides pre- and post- procedure patient education and counseling

  • Recognizes needs for/obtains physicians’ assistance, input , and guidance as indicated within limits of scope of practice

  • Works collaboratively with medical, technical and support staff

  • Facilitates/initiates inter/intra-departmental problem-solving and communication

  • Assists with & facilitates research activities

  • Participate in patient care conferences/tumor boards

  • Takes part in patient rounds with the responsible physicians as necessary

  • Diagnose health problems and manage the healthcare care of patients

  • Prescribe and Order Physical Therapy

  • Perform any other areas of management in which the APRN has been formally trained and educated to provide

  • Participate in on call weekend coverage as assigned.

  • Performs related duties as requires patient and family decision making by providing educational tools.

  • Adheres to University and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguards University assets.

    CORE QUALIFICATIONS

    Education:

    Master’s Degree in Nursing

    Certification and Licensing:

    Florida APRN License

    Experience:

    Minimum 2 years of relevant experience

    Ability to exercise sound judgment in making critical decisions.

    Skill in completing assignments accurately and with attention to detail.

    Ability to analyze, organize and prioritize work under pressure while meeting deadlines.
