The University of Miami/UHealth Department of Orthopedics Private Clinics is currently seeking a full time Cast Technician to work in Miami. The Cast Technician assists in the removal of casts, splints, and braces, and works with orthopedic technicians to instruct patients in caring for their injuries, understanding and adjusting traction equipment, and adjusting crutches, walkers, and other aids.

CORE JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Assists physician and nursing personnel with orthopedic casting procedures, including the application and removal of a variety of casts and splints.

  • Supports medical staff with routine examination and treatment procedures such as removing casts, cleaning wounds, and applying dressings.

  • Provides continuity of post-op care casting, splinting, and bracing, and documents all treatments in patients’ medical records.

  • Administers medication and assists with medical supplies and equipment during minor procedures. Maintains appropriate par level of supplies, medications, and instruments, and places orders.

  • Keeps examination rooms, and cast rooms, fully stocked and ensures that they are cleaned after each patient.

  • Maintains coding procedures for modalities and supplies utilized.

  • Facilitates patient flow and assists physician and nursing personnel in coordinating patient care. Adheres to University and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguards University assets.

CORE QUALIFICATIONS

Education:

High school diploma or equivalent

Experience:

Minimum 1 year of relevant experience

Department Specific Functions

  • Application of casts using a variety of materials including plaster and synthetic casting materials and high and low temperature plastics, with minimal or no supervision

  • Apply appropriate cast/splint per physician order using appropriate casting/ splint material with body in appropriate position.

  • Shape cast to ensure maximum comfort and minimum unnecessary pressures

  • Trim and remodel cast to ensure comfort and fit with cast knife, cast cutter, and cast spreader to remove parts of cast and to enlarge cast to decrease pressure in swollen area.

  • Performs appropriate documentation and patient education related to cast or splinting and as directed by physician, Nurse Practitioner, Physician Assistant resident or Registered Nurse.

  • Mold, fit and trim synthetic or plastic splints to fit patients

  • Customize splints and braces as necessary for patient use.

  • Serial casting for flexion contractures and diabetic ulcers

  • Application and adjustment of orthopedic devices such as braces, splints, and compression stockings.

  • Obtain measurements from patient as necessary.

  • Prepare mold of appropriate part of patient’s body ensuring body part in proper alignment.

  • Position, align and adjust orthopedic device on correct body part ensuring correct fit to patient with maximum possible comfort.

  • Adjust hinged orthopedic devices to physician specifications.

  • Modify or customize brace or splint for appropriate patient fit.

  • Instruct patient on use, adjustment, and adaptation and care of device.

  • Skill in completing assignments accurately and with attention to detail.

  • Ability to analyze, organize and prioritize work under pressure while meeting deadlines.

  • Ability to process and handle confidential information with discretion.

  • Ability to work evenings, nights, and weekends as necessary.
