Biochemistry & Molecular Biology has an exciting opportunity for a Senior Bioinformatics Analyst position. The incumbent is available within the Telonis lab at the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, University of Miami, Florida for a basic research project studying the role of gene architecture in regulating gene expression in normal physiology and in disease, including cancer. Our previous work has demonstrated that stem cells express genes of a specific architecture and retrotransposon content but as stem cells differentiate they express genes with a different underlying structure, particularly of the respective introns (BMC Biol 2021 19(1):60; Nat Commun 13(1):6524).

We are seeking a highly talented and motivated computer scientist to join the lab. The candidate should demonstrate expertise in software development, with emphasis in algorithms analyzing biological “omic” data, e.g. RNA-sequencing, ATAC-seq, HiC, ChIP-seq. Prior experience in machine learning (artificial intelligence, AI) is preferred but not required. It is expected that the candidate will have the ability to develop, curate and maintain novel AI-based computational pipelines or apply existing bioinformatic tools for biological discovery.

JOB FUNCTIONS

  1. Develops and maintains next generation data analysis pipelines.

  2. Assists in analysis pipeline and algorithms development and validation.

  3. Extracts features of interest from data relating to specific biological questions.

  4. Contributes to the development and maintenance of genomic and clinical databases.

  5. Performs statistical and integrative data analysis on genomics and clinical data.

  6. Supervises team members and other data analysts.

  • Development, maintaince and optimize computational software (“pipelines”) for the analysis and mining of “omic” biological data, considering factors like load time.

  • Developing and applying machine learning (Artificial Intelligence, AI) algorithms for answering biological questions on “omic” datasets.

  • Work with version control systems to manage the lab’s code repositories and facilitate team collaboration.

  • Assist with other lab members’ research and coding efforts, including code review to ensure code quality, performance and share knowledge.
