Wesleyan University Assistant Professor of Religion in Middletown, Connecticut

The Department of Religion at Wesleyan University invites applicants for a tenure-track position in Jewish Studies at the rank of Assistant Professor to begin July 1, 2025. The Department seeks candidates with comprehensive training in Jewish studies, Jewish religious traditions, and the broader academic study of religion. Qualified candidates must have proficiency in Biblical Hebrew and other languages relevant to their research interests, as well as a wide range of the Jewish intertextual tradition, and should demonstrate a commitment to teaching in a liberal arts setting. The Department is flexible with regard to the candidate’s disciplinary orientation, but special consideration will be given to candidates whose work is informed by current theoretical trends in Religious Studies. Scholars focusing on Sephardic and/or non-European geographies are especially encouraged to apply. Wesleyan hosts an interdepartmental Center for Jewish Studies, of which the candidate would be an integral member. The successful candidate will be expected regularly to teach courses in the Hebrew Bible and Judaism(s), and will teach on a rotating basis the Department’s Introduction to the Study of Religion and Majors Colloquium in Religious Studies. Candidates should have Ph.D. in hand at the time of appointment to be hired as an Assistant Professor; a successful candidate may be hired as an Instructor if the candidate does not have a Ph.D. in hand at the time of appointment, but will complete the Ph.D. within one year of hire. The teaching load is 2/2, in person on Wesleyan’s campus. Additional duties include advising and mentoring students, carrying on a program of research, and participating in faculty governance at the departmental and university level.
