MIDLOTHIAN - CITY OF WTP Operator in MIDLOTHIAN, Texas
Position Summary
Starting Hiring Range: $51,597.31 - 63,206.71, annually
Under direct supervision, this position performs work in the inspection, operation, and maintenance of the Citys water treatment plants and pumping facilities.
**No experience required; however, preference will be given to candidates who possess a Water Class C (Surface Water) license and have a minimum of one (1) year progressively responsible experience as a WTP Operator.
Applicants who do not possess a Water Class C (Surface Water) license and a minimum of one (1) year progressively responsible experience as a WTP Operator will be hired as a WTP Operator (Trainee) at a starting hiring range of $46,823.71 - $57,359.05, annually.**
Essential Job Functions
- Performs required TCEQ water testing procedures by checking treatment process at each sample point.
- Performs water lab analyses of samples collected, including PH, alkalinity, chlorine, ammonia, NTU, and chlorine dioxide tests.
- Interprets the results of lab tests and makes chemical and pumping flow changes.
- Filters backwash, refills the chemical tank, skims filters and basins, and fixes minor chemical leaks.
- Verifies the calibration of lab equipment.
- Monitors the treatment process by checking the chemical pumps, high service pumps, filters, and treatment equipment.
- Verifies chemical settings and observes flocculation and sedimentation basins.
- Monitors the distribution of water usage using SCADA.
- Checks the elevated storage tank levels.
- Receives chemical deliveries, puts up supplies, changes light bulbs, sweeps and mops floors, and takes out the trash.
- All other duties as assigned.
Education and Experience
High school diploma or GED equivalent, is required.
Minimum of one (1) year progressively responsible experience as a Water Treatment Plant Operator is required for the WTP Operator position.
No experience required for the Water Treatment Operator (Trainee) position.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Advanced knowledge of city and departmental practices, procedures, systems, and federal, state, and local laws, regulations, codes, ordinances, and best practices relating to the treatment and distribution of drinking water.
- A comprehensive, practical knowledge of a technical field with use of analytical judgment and decision-making abilities appropriate to the work environment of the organization.
- Knowledge of and ability to correctly interpret, explain, and apply laws, rules, operations, practices, procedures, regulations, and policies.
- Basic knowledge of chemistry.
- Ability to work with complicated formulas, equipment, and chemicals.
- Ability to interpret charts, flow diagrams, maintenance manuals, and instructions.
- Ability to perform minor mechanical repairs.
- Knowledge, skill, and ability to utilize telephone, fax machines, computers and applicable software daily including, but not limited to, Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems, Microsoft Office, Microsoft Outlook, and Laserfiche.
- Advanced ability to read papers, periodicals, journals, manuals, dictionaries, thesauruses, and encyclopedias, to deal with system of real numbers; practical application of fractions, percentages, ratios/proportions, and measurement and to write reports, prepare business letters, expositions, and summaries with proper format, punctuation, spelling, and grammar, using all parts of speech.
- Advanced ability to learn and perform basic operational, technical, and office processes.

Special Requirements Mobility within an office, field, and outdoor environment is required.
Works 12-hour shifts.
Must be able to work flexible hours, including nights, holidays, and weekends.
Subject to be on-call during non-working hours. *Licenses and Certifications* **Water Class C (Surface Water) license is required for the WTP Operator position.
Water Treatment Operator (Trainees) must obtain a Water Class C (Surface Water) license within two (2) years of employment.**
Must possess and maintain a valid drivers license with acceptable driving record as established by the City of Midlothian driving standards.
Work Environment Work is performed in both outside environments and inside climate-controlled water treatment plant facilities. Occasional exposure to various disagreeable elements including weather conditions. Position demands are sedentary in nature but include walking, standing, reaching, and bending. Work may cause light fatigue of eyes and fingers because of routine use of motor senses. Position requires some heavy lifting up to 50 lbs. Exposure to chemicals and gases in the work environment.
