Position Summary:

The Sr. Technician role carries out research tasks, designs of experiments, and coordination with technical teams. Perform laboratory experiments and trials, which are designed to evaluate proof of concept prototypes, new materials/ components, and processes. The work may include assembly, debugging, testing and troubleshooting of new materials, products, and process technologies. Provides guidance for Co-op students and lab technicians as needed. Additional duties require operation and maintenance of laboratory equipment within departmental Standard Operating Procedures.

Accountabilities

  • Strong technical ability, multi-tasked, computer-literate, solid communication skills, accurate/attention to detail, analytical, and self-motivated.

  • Strong understanding of operation of all metallurgical lab equipment which includes:

  • Mounting, cutting, grinding, and polishing potted cross sectioned samples.

  • Micro and multi-hardness testing

  • Instron systems

  • Salt spray and climatic chamber

  • Stereomicroscope

  • Shave simulator (I.M.P.A.C.T.)

  • Works well with all levels of internal technical staff

  • Prepare samples for testing according to appropriate protocols and test methods.

  • Execute testing and record raw data results consistent with good record keeping procedures

  • Write reports, reviews and summaries of tests and experiments performed.

  • Present results/findings to key stakeholders.

  • Stay updated with relevant laboratory test methods, equipment and industry standards

  • Installing and maintaining laboratory test equipment

  • Calibrate laboratory test equipment.

  • Prepare and pack test samples for consumer use test according to test protocols.

  • Conducting all activities consistent with company and departmental policies and procedures.

  • Perform experiments and trials, which are designed to evaluate proof of concept prototypes.

  • Operate, maintain, repair and troubleshoot existing Lab equipment and gages.

  • Assist in maintaining procedures necessary for proper lab operations.

  • Provide technical support to other RD&E groups as required.

  • Interface with various internal and external personnel including RD&E, Manufacturing, and Quality to coordinate work required and schedules.

  • Purchase responsibility for lab equipment and supplies, proper utilization and maintenance of capital assets

  • (Lab) and financial accountability for all projects

  • Provides leadership for lab when the Supervisor is unavailable.

Required Education, Skills and Experience

  • Associates Degree with 5 years related experience or;

  • High School degree or general education degree (GED) plus 7 years of work experience

  • 5 years minimum laboratory experience (metallurgical experience preferred) or 5 years working experience in Manufacturing environment

Desirable Education, Skills and Experience

  • Must possess computer skills (Excel, Word, Outlook)

  • Proven ability to perform complex laboratory procedures and collect data.

  • The ability to work on multiple tasks with a minimum of supervision.

  • Good communication, interpersonal skills and report writing ability.

  • Hands-on experience in the mechanical, metrology, and analytical testing fields.

  • Previous leadership skills and experience.

  • Miyachi Unitek LMF5000 (Laser etching)

  • OGP flash 200 optical measurement system for taking various BSA measurements.

  • Setting up and operating all laser welders for any type of BSA’s

Work Environment

  • Must be able to periodically lift, tighten, lower, and shift loads that require testing.

  • Must be willing to perform repetitive tasks on a daily basis. This includes testing of daily samples and research related projects.

The salary range for this position is $56,000 - $80,000. Actual base salary offered to a candidate may vary based upon factors including, but not limited to, relevant experience, time in role, base salary of internal peers, prior performance, business sector, and geographic location. In addition to base salary, the competitive compensation package may include, depending on the role, participation in an incentive program linked to performance.
