Job Summary:

The Unified Police Department of Greater Salt Lake is now accepting applications for the position of Entry Level and Lateral full-time Police Officer.

Entry Level:

The successful applicant must meet the minimum requirements to obtain a P.O.S.T. Law Enforcement (LEO) certification. The applicant must also pass the National Police Officer Selection Test (NPOST) with a minimum overall score of 80% or higher. A copy of the NPOST score must be submitted at time of application. Preference points will be awarded for Military Veterans, LEO Certifiable Candidates, and those with a college degree.

**UPD will "sponsor" the successful candidate to attend the P.O.S.T. academy with full pay and benefits until certification is obtained.

Lateral:

Lateral appointments will be considered for those applicants with a minimum of one year of completed law enforcement (LEO) experience within the last three years. Lateral candidates must possess a current P.O.S.T. LEO certification or be able to obtain a Utah LEO Certification by time of hire. Lateral applicants will receive service credit for the purposes of pay calculation on a year-for-year basis up to the maximum of 12 years. Successful candidates will be able to pass a background investigation, pre-employment drug screening and medical exam. Preference points will be awarded for Military Veterans and those with a college degree.

All candidates hired will serve a 12-month probationary period.

Essential Functions:

The Police Officer position is subordinate to the Chief of Police and all other raking officers of the department.

Performs a wide variety of police functions, including but not limited to: Crime suppression, crime prevention, protection of personal liberties, regulation of non-criminal conduct, and provision of services. Police Officers are given specific work instructions by superior officers on new assignments but work independently in performing regularly assigned duties.

Duties include, but are not limited to:

• Responds to calls for service, assistance for other officers and at the direction of supervisory personnel.

•Suppresses crime through identification and apprehension of criminals and recovery of stolen property.

•Regulates non-criminal conduct, such as traffic control, crowd control, and social relations.

•Reports to the scene of accidents and investigates the causes and results of accidents.

•Responds to robbery and burglary alarms and other misdemeanor and felony crimes, which may necessitate the exertion of extraordinary physical effort and the use of initiative and common sense.

•Secures the scene of crime, conducts preliminary investigations, gathers evidence, identifies witnesses, and makes arrests.

•Makes investigations of vice and narcotics activities, identifies and recovers stolen property, investigates reports of stolen automobiles and property stolen from automobiles, conducts investigations of homicides and thefts, conducts special investigations for other law enforcement agencies, investigates all complaints on checks and forgeries, investigates complaints of crimes committed by juveniles. May work undercover in performing these functions to obtain evidence to be used in the arrest and conviction of guilty parties.

•Compiles and prepares required information and evidence to assist in prosecution of criminal cases. Testifies as a witness in court.

•Attends regular training classes in police methods.

•Provides peripheral services such as giving information, directions, advice and general assistance to the public whenever necessary.

•Prepares thorough and complete reports of investigations and daily activity.

•Maintains a working knowledge of criminal and traffic law.

• Operates a law enforcement vehicle within safety guidelines of UPD policies

•Performs other related duties as required.

Job Responsibilities:

The Unified Police Department of Greater Salt Lak serves the cities of Holladay, Millcreek and Midvale as well as the Townships of Kearns, Magna, White City, Copperton, Brighton, and Emigration Canyon. The department is structured to share in the cost of policing, thereby creating economies of scale and increasing the ability of the department to provide professional, high quality police services to the communities we serve.

The department has assignments in Patrol and Investigations. Specialty positions include: VCU, SVU, Fraud/DV, Crash Reconstruction, K9, Traffic/Motors, SWAT, SRO, Drone Unit, and Shelter Resource Detective.

Minimum Qualifications:

•Graduation from high school or possession of GED Certificate.

•Must be a U.S. Citizen.

•Must be 21 years of age or older.

•Must have valid Utah Driver License.

•No felony convictions.

•No DUI convictions in the 2 years prior to applying.

•No domestic violence convictions.

•Successful completion of Peace Officer Merit Commission examination process which may include Utah N.P.O.S.T. exam (passing score of 80% or better), physical fitness examination, oral interview, background investigation, CVSA examination, medical examination, and drug screen.

•UTAH Peace Officer Standards Training Law Enforcement Officer certification (Lateral Candidates Only).
