School/College/Division Description

The Department of Urban Planning is celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2024-2025. The Master of Urban Planning program is fully accredited by the Planning Accreditation Board and is currently renewing this accreditation. Currently, more than 40 students are enrolled in the Master of Urban Planning program, and these students can also take advantage of joint masters’ degree opportunities with Architecture, Civil Engineering (transportation), and Public Administration. The department offers graduate certificates in Geographic Information Systems and Real Estate Development and an undergraduate Certificate in Urban Planning.

The Department of Urban Planning is an integral part of the School of Architecture and Urban Planning and the College of the Arts and Architecture. Like other units within school and college, the department is recognized for its engagement in the community. Faculty and students conduct research and develop client projects that benefit Milwaukee, Southeastern Wisconsin, and beyond. Students in the Master of Urban Planning program learn from practical experiences that prepare them for professional careers in the planning field.

Located on the shore of Lake Michigan, Milwaukee and its suburbs offer a variety of housing options, diverse, walkable and livable neighborhoods, access to good schools, an established arts and cultural scene, and research opportunities around the Great Lakes ecology, urban community cultures, and post-industrial heritage. The urban context of the school allows faculty research to build on the specific and unique conditions of Milwaukee.

Job Summary

The Department of Urban Planning at UWM invites applications for a tenure-track assistant professor in Urban Planning to start in August 2025. The expectations of this assistant professor position include teaching, research, student advising, faculty committee service, and other duties and responsibilities normally expected of the faculty of the University. The assistant professor will first receive a three-year probationary appointment through 2027-2028 and then can be reappointed on a probationary basis through 2030-2031. The assistant professor must apply for tenure and promotion and undergo review by this time (or earlier). The assistant professor’s tenure journey will be supported by Department of Urban Planning faculty, the School of Architecture & Urban Planning, and the College of the Arts & Architecture through an annual review process and mentoring.

The Department of Urban Planning emphasizes applied, practice-based teaching and research, underpinned by Partnerships, Power, Place, and Possibilities (4 P’s) in our pursuit of social justice and sustainable economic development in cities like Milwaukee, across the Midwest, and the nation. The new faculty member needs to show commitment to addressing systemic inequities in cities and regions, as this would complement the community-engaged research and practice that has historically been done by the Department in Milwaukee and surrounding communities. In addition to developing an independent research agenda, the new faculty member should look for opportunities to collaborate with faculty in the Department of Urban Planning and other parts of UWM through the Center for Equity Practice and Planning Justice, Center for Pedestrian and Bicyclist Safety, and other grant-funded projects.

  • Professional planning experience or demonstrated experience within applied practice and community collaboration is desirable. Familiarity with global issues in planning and an ability to integrate these issues into course teaching is also desirable.

Target Salary Range Starting salary will be $70,000 (Final salary offer contingent upon skills, knowledge, and abilities as they relate to the position).
