JOB REQUIREMENTS: JOB SUMMARY: The certified professional coder (CPC) is responsible for overseeing the medical coding for the agency. The coder makes sure that medical coding used is in compliance with all coding laws and regulations and ensures that the coding used is for reimbursable expenses when necessary. Coders must also maintain confidentiality and stay current on changes to insurance coding. Duties are highly complex, varied, require planning and coordinating several activities at one time, and demand the use of problem-solving skills and analysis of circumstances to develop appropriate actions. CPC (and/or Apprentice) is subject to frequent interruptions, in person and by phone, which require varied response ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES): Primary responsibilities of Certified Professional Coder: Protect the security of medical records to ensure that confidentiality is maintained. Identify, compile and code patient data, using ICD-10-CM and CPT and other standard classification coding systems. Enter data, such as history and extent of disease, diagnostic procedures and treatment into computer database. Compile, abstract and maintain patient medical records to document condition and treatment. Review records for completeness, accuracy and compliance with regulations. Responsibility for Accuracy Review of work and subsequent procedures would detect most significant errors of job functions. However, more serious errors could result in inefficient operations and loss of revenue. Because information in the health record is the basis for reimbursement as well as clinical decision-making, coding entries must be complete and accurate. The amount of reimbursement depends on the correct coding of diagnoses and procedures assignment. The work has a direct effect on medical record keeping and a direct impact on the accuracy, documentation, timeliness, reliability and acceptability of information in the medical record services. Work has considerable impact on the accreditation status of GLIIHC, quality of patient care, reliability of research data, compliance and the maximization of Third-Party reimbursement. QUALIFICATIONS/EDUCATION and/or SKILLS/KNOWLEDGE: High school diploma or equivalent. CCS, CCS-P or CPC, CPC-A certification is required. One year of coding experience using ICD-10-CM.
