Summary Responsibilities The GS-9 Medical Instrument Technician (Anesthesia) at the Clement J. Zablocki Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Anesthesiology Division Technical Section is assigned the Special Assignment - Board Runner and Stat Lab/ Anesthesia Supply Coordinator position. The GS-9 Medical Instrument Technician (Anesthesia) carries out all the responsibilities of the GS-8 Medical Instrument Technician (Anesthesia) and has higher levels of professional responsibilities and expertise. This position stays in constant communication with the OR Charge Nurse and Anesthesiologist Board Runner to ensure schedules changes are addressed. This position makes daily Anesthesia Tech room assignments and provides technical support to staff and resident anesthesiologists necessary for the safe and efficient delivery of Anesthesia Stat Lab services in the Operating Rooms, Recovery Room, Pain Clinic, Cardiac Catheterization Lab, Electrophysiology Lab, Gastrointestinal Lab, Dental, Interventional Radiology, MRI and CT. This is a non-supervisory position. Major Duties In addition to performing all GS-8 Medical Instrument Technician (Anesthesia) duties, perform higher-level duties consisting of significant scope, complexity (difficulty), and range of variety. These higher-level duties are performed at least 33% of the time. Board Runner Make Anesthesia Tech room assignment according to procedure/patient acuity and Anesthesia Tech availability Ensure break/lunch coverage is provided for the Anesthesia Techs Perform daily constant two-way communication with the Charge Nurse and Anesthesiologist Board Runner Provide the Timekeeper with an Anesthesia Tech schedule every pay period Maintain the Anesthesia Tech On-Call calendar. Assist the supervisor with premium pay requests approvals on VATAS/GovTA. Attend the monthly OR Committee meeting (second Thursday of the month, 1:00pm - 2:00pm) Stat Lab Coordinator Ensure daily oversight duties of the OR STAT Lab including calibrating, operating, maintaining, performing quality control and troubleshooting the analyzers. Maintain a thorough understanding of College of American Pathologists (CAP) and Joint Commission (JC) regulatory requirements in preparation for inspections. Ensure annual proficiencies, monthly liquid quality control, software upgrades, cell saver quality controls are completed and coordinate rotation Interact with the Main Laboratory/Ancillary Testing Coordinator (ATC) to ensure compliance with "comparability of results." (i.e. monthly correlations with main laboratory). Anesthesia Supply Coordinator Maintain/organize anesthesia supply inventory and submit new anesthesia supply requests and eliminate unused supplies. Ability to evaluate new products and make recommendations concerning developments which would improve operations. Address anesthesia supply recall/action assignments through the Salesforce application Represent the Anesthesiology Division on the weekly Supply Touch Base Call (Tuesday, 10:00am - 10:30am) Represent the Anesthesiology Division on the monthly Clinical Product Review Committee (CPRC) meeting (Third Wednesday of the month, 1:00pm - 1:50pm) Work Schedule: Monday - Friday Telework: Not Available Virtual: This is not a virtual position. Basic Requirements: Citizenship: Must be a citizen of the United States. Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. English Language Proficiency: Medical Instrument Technicians must be proficient in spoken and written English in accordance with chapter 2, section D, paragraph 5a, this part. May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria). In addition to the basic requirements above, the below criteria must be met when determining the grade qualifications. GS-9 LEVEL Experience: At least 1 year of experience comparable to the next lower grade level (GS-8), which is directly related to the duties of the position to be filled, and must fully meet the Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities at that level. This would include specialized experience as an anesthesia technician which demonstrates possession of the knowledge, skills, and abilities required to provide all aspects of anesthesia technician services including specialized duties. In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the following KSAs and the potential to acquire the assignment specific KSAs designated by an asterisk (*): 1. Knowledge and comprehensive understanding of laboratory testing procedures to include maintenance, calibration, and quality control procedures. This includes the ability to perform these lab tests accurately and correctly. 2. Advanced knowledge of electronics and anesthesia equipment with skill in repairing and maintaining this equipment and repairing complex problems. 3. *Comprehensive knowledge of central venous and pulmonary artery (Swan-Ganz) catheterization procedures including measuring cardiac outputs and intra-aortic balloon counter pulsation procedures (i.e., balloon pump). 4. *Knowledge and ability to assist with airway management techniques. 5. *Knowledge of JCAHO and other regulatory requirements. 6. Ability to communicate effectively and professionally with employees at varying grade levels. 7. *Ability to manage and supervise employees. 8. *Ability to provide, or provide for, staff development and training. Preferred Experience: American Society of Anesthesia Technologists and Technicians (ASATT), Anesthesia Technologist (A.T.), Basic Life Support (BLS), and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification are highly desired. Physical Requirements: The work requires standing or walking for a major portion of the work day. The walking will often require carrying supplies or pushing carts and equipment. Standing will require holding patients or stocking supplies. This may occupy half of the work day and will hence be considered demanding physical activity. A certain mechanical dexterity is required in the replacement of parts and the repair of equipment to restore or maintain operability after faults are identified.
