How your work would contribute to our organization and the Twin Cities region:

Assists Metro Transit operating division maintain 1.7 million square feet of office and industrial space divided into 10 primary locations. Maintains, repairs and cleans facilities; ranging from rebuilding, fabricating, and cleaning shelters to operating heavy equipment for landscape and snow removal to operating sophisticated automated HVAC systems.

This recruitment may establish a six (6) month eligibility list for current and future vacancies if we have multiple qualified candidates.

Hire:$37.80 hourly

After year one: $39.90(based on ATU salary rates starting 8/1/2023)

After year two: $42.00(Subject to contract change, based on ATU salary rates starting 8/1/2023)

This role is eligible to receive a $4,000 Hiring Bonus!

  • $2,000 after the first 30 days of employment, and

  • $2,000 after successfully completing a probationary period.

What you would do in this job

  • Performs fabrication, assembly, installation, repair, cleaning, maintaining, and operating various facilities, equipment, motors, HVAC systems, boilers, lighting systems, exhaust systems, bus wash racks, pressure washers, overhead doors, hoists (in ground, portable, electric and hydraulic), and industrial yard equipment;

  • Performs building grounds maintenance work, operates equipment for lawn care and snow removal at all Metro Transit facilities, Park and Rides, and other metropolitan locations.

  • Assists contractors, electricians and others.

  • Cleans work areas and facilities, indoors and outdoors.

  • Perform other related duties.

What education and experience are required for this job (minimum qualifications)

Education/Experience:

  • Graduate of a two-year vocational school program in facility maintenance or related field AND three (3) years of experience in performing building maintenance duties and with facility maintenance heating systems.

Equivalency:

  • High school diploma or GED AND five (5) years of experience in performing building maintenance duties and with facility maintenance heating systems.

  • Candidates will be required to obtain a Special Boilers License within 6 months of employment. Further, candidates will be required to acquire a 1st Class C Boiler Operators license within 4 years of employment.

License Requirements:

  • Valid drivers' license and good driving record.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Basic knowledge of the practices and procedures of building maintenance and repair.

  • Basic knowledge of various mechanical, electrical, plumbing, pneumatic and HVAC controls and systems.

  • Knowledge of the care and supervision in the use of strong chemicals.

  • Skill in use of computers related to diagnosing or troubleshooting electrical problems.

  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to communicate in English.

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

Safety Sensitive: Yes. Subject to random DOT drug tests.

Work Environment: Work is performed in Metro Transit facilities, buildings and outdoors. Some travel is required. May require working in wet or hot, humid non-weather conditions, and in high precarious places up to two thirds of the time. Exposure to hazardous physical conditions such as mechanical parts, electrical currents, and vibration, atmospheric conditions such as fumes, odors, dusts, gases, and poor ventilation, hazardous materials such as chemicals, extreme temperatures, inadequate lighting, and work space restricts movement, and intense noise may occur on the job.

Physical Requirements: May require lifting up to 50 pounds. May work near moving parts or equipment, in the presence of fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals and vibrations. May also be required to lift more than 100 pounds with assistance.

    If you are new to the Metropolitan Council, you must pass a drug test (safety sensitive positions only), and a background check which verifies education, employment, and criminal history. A driving record check and/or physical may be conducted if applicable to the job. If you have a criminal conviction, you do not automatically fail. The Metropolitan Council considers felony, gross misdemeanor and misdemeanor convictions on a case-by-case basis, based on whether they are related to the job and whether the candidate has demonstrated adequate rehabilitation.
