Overview
MHealth Fairview Health Services has an exciting opportunity for a Hematopathology Departmental Supervisor at M Health Fairview University of Minnesota Medical Center-East Bank (https://mhealthfairview.org/locations/m-health-fairview-university-of-minnesota-medical-center---east-bank) . Oversite of this department includes Flow cytometry and Special Hematology. The Department supervisor will be responsible for the oversight of Hematopathology operations including: quality and compliance oversight, talent acquisition and management, growth and development, and works closely with specialists and medical directors to ensure allocation of resources, new test validation and roll out. The supervisor will work collaboratively with the Laboratory leadership to achieve the vision for Fairview Laboratory services. The ideal applicant will have a minimum of 5 years of experience in Hematopathology testing.
Hematopathology serves a unique and diverse patient population with our hospital recognized as a national leader in areas like bone marrow transplantation. In addition, our hospital has also recently been established as a rare disease center of excellence. Our team of 17 staff members perform highly specialized testing for cell therapy, transplant, and malignant disease. Testing includes peripheral blood morphology, bone marrow collection and morphology, special stains, 10-12 color Leukemia/Lymphoma immunophenotyping, stem cell enumeration, and lymphocyte subset analysis.
Responsibilities Job Description
The Department Supervisor has direct responsibilities for the complete operation of the Hematopathology laboratory. The responsibilities include oversight of operations including system regulatory compliance in their area of expertise, creation of system protocols and procedures, intradepartmental processes, departmental specific LIS build and processes, coordination and development of department specific quality programs, department specific implementation of new equipment, and ensuring provisioning of testing needs. The department supervisor is responsible for the supervision of employees in collaboration with laboratory managers/directors The department supervisor assures the provision of accurate testing which best meets the customer expectations in a cost-effective manner.
Job expectations include:
Responsible for operations of a system laboratory
Provides daily supervision of the laboratory or laboratory section
Assumes responsibility for the technical operations of the lab(s) or lab section(s)
Assumes responsibility for Human resource management
Participates in planning and financial management for the lab or lab section
Evaluates testing results for accuracy and appropriate intervention
Supervises laboratory activities in Laboratory Quality Assurance, Performance Improvement and Laboratory Compliance Programs
Qualifications
Required
Education
Baccalaureate or higher degree from an accredited college/university in a related laboratory field including the related lab practicum or equivalent routes meeting qualifications as a general supervisor for high complexity testing as specified in CLIA ’88.
Baccalaureate degree from an accredited college/university in chemical, biological, clinical or medical laboratory science, or medical technology from an accredited institution (Diploma with field of study listed or transcript must be provided); -OR-
Baccalaureate degree from an accredited college/university with 16 semester hours in biology including one semester in microbiology and 16 semester hours in chemistry including one semester in organic or biochemistry (Transcript must be provided); -OR-
A transcript evaluation verifying equivalency to a U.S. Baccalaureate degree from an accredited college/university (Equivalency verification documentation must be provided); -OR-
Completion of a 50 week U.S. military medical laboratory training course and a Baccalaureate degree from an accredited college/university with 16 semester hours in biology including one semester in microbiology and 16 semester hours in chemistry including one semester in organic or biochemistry (Transcript must be provided); -OR-
Master’s degree from an accredited college/university in molecular biology, biotechnology, chemistry, biology, cytology, immunology, immunohematology, microbiology, allied health, medical laboratory science, or an appropriately related field (Diploma with field of study listed or transcript must be provided).
Experience
Candidates with baccalaureate or higher degree in chemical, biological, clinical or medical laboratory science, or medical technology must have 1 year of laboratory training or experience, or both, in high complexity testing; -OR-
Candidates qualifying by baccalaureate degree and semester hours must have 2 years of laboratory training or experience, or both, in high complexity testing;
License/Certification/Registration
- Applicant must possess or be eligible to receive appropriate Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) approved laboratory certification. If not certified at the time of hire, must obtain certification within 12 months of hire.

AMT – MLS or MT
Preferred
Experience
- 5 years’ experience in designated discipline or area of responsibility or the department specific required years’ experience listed above.
